Hi everyone, my name is Alyssa Catalan and today I will be talking to you guys about my experiences with bikes and kind of how my bicycle experiences are kind of different from everyone else.

Okay so to start off, I guess I should talk about my first bike ever. It was one of those Barbie bikes with the pink tassels on the handle bars and training wheels. I thought it was one of the coolest things ever. I didn’t really have any trouble riding the bike with the training wheels, since that kind of did all the balancing for me. But as soon as my uncle wanted me to take the training wheels off and try riding without them, I had little scrapes and scabs all over my knees from falling off. Regardless of the scrapes and scabs, I was having the time of my life with that bike. Eventually I got the hang of balancing myself and ended up with less and less scrapes. My brothers and I would ride up and down the street or in the backyard having races around the apple tree.

However, as my brothers and I got older we started going out less and less. This was because we discovered that the internet was kind of a great thing and that playing Maplestory and online games were great for pass time. Even if we weren’t going out as much, we were still having fun. During this time, I didn’t really ride any bikes.

Fast forward a few years later to last summer, my friends and I went to Google headquarters and decided to ride one of those Google bikes. This was one of the first times I’ve ridden a bike in years, but I was thinking “Oh, like everyone stops riding bikes but as soon as they try they’ll get the hang of it. No one ever really forgets how to ride a bike, right?” Yeah, I was wrong, I got on that bike and fell to the side real quick. This experience came to mind when in the beginning of the semester we read Strickland’s “What Every Kid Wants,” in the reading he says that riding a bike is natural, and that even if you don’t ride for awhile you don’t really forget how to ride. I totally disagree with this, because I completely forgot how to ride a bike. So as of now, the only bikes I can ride are my 5-year old cousin’s bike with the training wheels because I’m so small. Maybe one day I’ll relearn to ride a bike without training wheels.

A Post About my 1st Bike

The first bike I ever owned pretty much looked like the one above- pink tassels, training wheels, and all. I thought it was the coolest thing honestly and I thought I was so cool riding it. I used to ride bikes up and down the short street my brothers and I lived at as a child. We didn’t really do much but ride around the street together. Sometimes we’d race around the apple tree in our back yard to see who could go around the fastest. It was pretty fun for a 5 year old, but as we grew up (around when I turned like 10) we stopped riding bikes, and kinda just spent all our time indoors.

Hi, I’m Alyssa and today I’m going to talk to you about how bicycles and cycling can affect our bodies. Specifically how cycling affects our muscles, joints, and the over all positive and negative effects that cycling has on our bodies.

So, muscles play a big role in riding bikes. This is because muscles are the things that actually allow you to use the pedals and control the handlebars. So it’s pretty obvious that you’re muscles are going to be affected while riding a bike. For the most part, muscles are affected in a pretty positive way. Through cycling muscles become stronger and more toned. The muscles in you’re leg, such as the hamstring; quadriceps; and calf muscles, are used while biking, and while a lot of people think that those are the only muscles being used that isn’t true. Muscles in your back and abdomen are used to stabilize your body while biking, while the muscles in your shoulders and arms are used to control the handlebars when steering. Therefore, you’re not only strengthening and toning the muscles in you’re leg, you’re also strengthening and toning muscles throughout you’re body.

Another thing that muscles affect in our bodies are our joints. Specifically concerning Arthritis, which is the painful swelling and stiffness on the joints. Cycling is one of the best exercises to prevent and reduce Arthritis because it is a low impact sport. Because cycling is a low impact sport, there isn’t too much stress being put on the joints. Although there isn’t a lot of stress being put on the joints, there is just enough for the joints to be stimulated. In addition to this, the flexing of the muscles in our thighs and lower leg are beneficial in controlling arthritis.

In addition to the benefits our muscles and joints receive due to cycling, there are also things that affect our whole body. For example, there is evidence that cycling, as a form of light physical activity, can lower the risk of cancer, specifically colon and breast cancer, compared to people who are stationary. Cycling can also be beneficial in that it helps with weight loss. This is because cycling at 10mph burns 260 calories an hour.

Just like there are positive things that affect the body when cycling, there are also negative things or risk that can happen when cycling. For example, there is a greater risk of getting injured if you get into a bike related accident. Since you’re completely open and don’t have much protective gear, besides a helmet, it’s easier to have more severe injuries, like broken bones. In addition to this, bicycle deaths account for 2% of all traffic deaths.

3 Presentation Ideas

Standard
  1. Credibility Assessment

For a presentation to test the credibility of an institution, group, or organization I would see whether or not there is any information available online about them. I would also see if there is any reviews or comments about the institution, group, or organization by members of the group. I would also check their website to see whether or not it looks informative. I would do this because sometimes people judge whether a group or organization is reliable through the website.

2. Personal Interest

Personally I am interested in fashion, so I thought that a presentation on bicycles fashion would be an interesting idea. I would speak about how differently people dressed while riding bicycles, starting from when the bicycle was first invented to now. I would also compare the different styles that bicyclist wear depending on whether they bike for casually for fun or if they bike competitively. If they bike competitively I could talk about the different advantages or disadvantages for different types of clothing. Another thing I could talk about for a presentation on bicycle fashion is the different things worn depending it is a man or a woman riding the bicycle.

3. Academic or Professional Interest

I am majoring in nursing, so I feel like giving a presentation on the effects of riding a bicycle on the body is something I would do. I could research the how the body, particularly the muscles and bones, are impacted by how you sit on a bicycle or how you hold onto the handlebars. I could also compare how different types of bicycles, such as a mountain bike or a bike used for casual use, affect the body. In addition to that I could compare which bike would put less strain on the body.

Strickland says that when riding a bike, even when you don’t ride for awhile, just feels natural. He believes that once you learn to ride a bike you don’t really forget how to. In my experience, I have found this to be false. I think this because as a child, I learned to ride a bike on my own and thought that I was fairly good at it, however as I grew older I rode bikes less and less. Then last year whenI was with my friends and we found a bike and I decided to try riding it. Long story short, I lost my balance and completely fell off the bike.
