Ted Talk Discussion

Shimon Schocken, went from being a computer science professor at NYU, to an inspiration to juvenile inmates in Israel. With permission from the juvy’s warren,Schocken formed a mountain biking group to help guide inmates in the center. Schocken feels that by riding through mountains, inmates are able to feel empowerment and freedom. Also, riders are able to learn problem solving techniques. Schocken explains that inmates have trouble going through small obstacles —which was a problem because they got frustrated super easily. Schocken, came up with different techniques to help them cope with this frustration—like just getting close to the inmate—by petting their shoulders, or giving them a piece of chocolate. This mountain biking group worked miracles for the inmates, teaching them how to not only love others, but how to also love themselves. The group also showed the inmates how to have confidence in themselves—erasing doubt that they had before. The tolerance that the inmates gained helped give them hope!

This video showed evidence because the information that was said during it—like the actual inmate stories were from the direct source. rides-of-hope

  1. Brianna, thanks for this. I wonder, what’s your reaction to this? Are you convinced? Perhaps we should start something like this here in San Francisco…
