S4 Self Reflection

After presenting, I feel like that this speech I was more comfortable about presenting in front of the class. One thing I would have wanted to do better was maybe work on talking more and working on the music more. Feel that when I was presenting that I was more clear with my points and was able to keep track on what to say next. I believe that we presented well in the class and was more relatable with this presentation. I think that my delivery was better this time because I practiced more. I think that this speech was one of the better ones because I really enjoyed presenting this speech.

S4 Write Out

Natalia:

Hi Im Natalia and I will be presenting with Tharshana today. So before we show our beautiful masterpiece. I wanted to talk a little about what we got out of this class.

During this class I was super nervous because I dreaded public speaking.

I thought this would be a weird class because i didn’t really know how much you could talk about bikes.

But as we went through the semester the subject matter grew more and more interesting.

We learned about  women and biking in the early 20th century and how the invention of the bicycle paved the way for spiritual independence.

We saw how Mikeal Colville used creditability as a researcher  to prove that more people are inclined to drive motor vechiles due to the promotion of helmets by brands and legislation.

We learned from Puja about how to penetrate the audiences’ attention by finesseing and prospering.

Overall  I feel like I have learned a lot about public speaking more than I would have in any other class because the subject matter here is so open and broad.

Tharshana:

So Natalia and I decided we wanted to do our speech together. Throughout the entire semester we really enjoyed the experience in this class and we wanted to share in our way how much this class meant to us. So we made a music video. So we are going to talk about how we came up of the lyrics for this and what inspired us.

So everyone likes Disney hopefully if not you’re crazy. So our favorite Disney movie is frozen so the song we used was love is an open door from frozen.

So this semester we talked about bike culture in sf and around the world and we learned a lot from it.

We learned about the culture of women on bikes and how it is very important everywhere, and being women ourselves we feel really passionate about this and learning more about the bike culture with women really inspired us to really go out there and bike.

We also really loved how this class gave us the opportunity to go out and explore city and personally I have lived in the city my entire life and I have never biked around it except for on the golden gate bridge so the fact that we went around golden gate park on bikes and saw how many people wore helmets and didn’t. It was a really good experience

In this video, I tried speaking in a different way without looking at my write out as much. Please excuse Tharshana.

Practice 3:

In this video I tried harder to memorize but it difficult to not look at write out. Please excuse Tharshana and Henrieta.

Self Reflection S3

After presenting, I feel like the one thing I did well was talk about something more personal about myself. One thing that I would have wanted to do better was to have sounded better. I feel that when I was presenting I was overwhelmed with all my facts and personal experiences that I was unable to keep track of where I was. I do not believe I conveyed my information to the audience how I wanted and wish that I was able to have practiced my presentation more. I think that my delivery was not the best but I know that I can definitely work on practicing my presentation with the speaking center . I did recognize when writing my speech that I was able to relate cross country to public speaking a lot. For future presentations, I want to prepare more in advanced and feel more comfortable speaking my information. I think that the speaking center is a good solution to getting help with presenting during class.

Speaking Center S3

During my speaking center appointment, we talked a lot about concluding my presentation. I found it helpful when the instructor talked about adding a wrap up to my conclusion my three main points. I also was given counsel on my powerpoint presentation and write out. I think that the speaking center was overall helpful and informative. I think that for my next speech that I want to go more to maybe actually practicing my speech in front of a coach in order to get feedback on my verbal presentation.

Write Out S3

Hi my name is Natalia and I am going to be talking about my experience with audience.

Moments before the gunshot went off, I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins as my body prepared itself to compete in a three mile race. As I looked around, I could see I was surrounded by my teammates. My team, my coach, and my supporters are all cheering me on and motivating me to take my place.

Although this isn’t a conventional audience I will illustrate why my team and its supporters can be classified as one and tell you three ways my experience in cross country has impacted me in a tremendous way.

One: Motivation

*explaining how audience pushed you, like”pressure” which was beneficial

Who was pushing you to succeed? Coaches .. give examples. Cheering you on, they evaluate your ability and give you workouts based on how well you do (this is your audience)

Coach would be watching you during your race, friend and family, and teammates. This motivates you to work hard.

Before each race I always felt the pressure to do well not only for myself, but also for my team. Based on my speed I was depended on by my teammates to earn a certain place and time in order to score for my team. During a race rather than pressure being stressful, it became a motivator. Having your teammates and coaches cheer you on in the middle of a race is extremely motivating; such an audience reminds you of the school you represent and all the people who have confidence in your abilities. Thus, the pressure I felt was beneficial; it was able to propel me to work harder because I knew that each race was not only about me, but my audience: the people who support me. The people who expected me to do well drove me to improve each time I raced and to become a better athlete.

Two: Setting goals

*explaining how audience taught you how to set goals

What are some of personal goals

What did the audience do specifically that made you learn to set goals.. (they showed how goals actually work. Every race you got faster bc every race you had a new time to beat/work towards)

In order to meet my coaches and my peers’ expectations, I had to learn how to set personal goals for myself after each race. I tried training harder during practices and setting times that I should be able to achieve during my races. I was also able to apply this goal setting technique into my academic life. I utilize my time wisely whether it be with homework, jobs, classes, or internships. As I set these personal goals for myself in practices, workouts, and meets I sat that my audience’s expectations were exemplified. Thus cross country ultimately allowed me to become a more goal oriented person.

Three: Confidence

*explaining how audience taught you to have courage

Go back to your audience. The team would cheer you on to go faster, pass people, push all the way to the finish line…

Becoming part of this team allowed me to open up more. During races, I was always to afraid to cut people off or to run right in front of them. But after awhile I was able to gain confidence to run faster and not be afraid of passing people by. I developed a mindset that forced me to think like a competitive athlete. I went from being afraid to compete at my full potential to continuously progressing throughout the season.

I feel like these three things have contributed to who I am as a person now and I think they have also helped me especially in this public speaking class. I am always finding new things I can fix about the way I talk and how I present and setting goals for myself helps me do that. Even with talking about confidence in the class, each time that I go up to talk I get less and less nervous because I already know what to expect. Therefore, my participation in cross country has helped me become a more confident and competitive athlete and student.

Class 4/27 Response

After researching a little about Emma O’Reilly, I saw that she was person that severely impacted by Lance Armstrong’s drug use. Especially being employed for the American Bicycle Team and working one-on-one with Armstrong, she experienced a different relationship with her clients. Although she enjoyed her job traveling and working with male athletes, her job was extraneous on her personal live as well. Being employed the American team, her was confidential between the riders and herself. She was asked by several riders including Armstrong to give enhancement drugs. She went trough extremes in order to get these drugs to her clients. Once she decided to tell the truth, Armstrong decided to sue and criticized her for being an alcoholic and a sleep about. Which in turn ended her marriage and another long term relationship. When Armstrong decided to admit to the truth, Emma felt like a huge weigh had been lifted and was able to build a relationship with Armstrong again. Relating this back to the reading “Judging Rhetoric”, the article that related to Emma O’Reilly was defending her predicament that she was in. It was unethical to help these riders get enhancement drugs, but it is hard to judge her decisions given that she is being employed by the people she has to support.
