Project 5 Reflection

This project was a particularly fun one to create. I really enjoyed the idea of a collaboration video as it was a little different from other ideas. It resembled YouTubers that actually work together in real life to combine sources and to establish more credibility. It was beneficial because working along with someone also aided me in gaining new insights or perspectives on an bike ride that I also experienced, but maybe in a different way. In the video Lexie and I made, I also felt like my delivery style was better than my speeches in class. This is because I did not rely on reading directly off of a script, instead I was more “extemporaneous” in that I just gave a “speech” based on memorizing knowledge and presenting it more naturally. I could still definitely work on my delivery style, but I am proud and happy about the fact that I was not completely dependent on reading an exact script of what I wanted to say!

Project 5 Credibility

In this project, I spoke about a specific bike ride that I went on with our class so to establish credibility I just recounted events that I actually experienced. As W. Horner mentions in his text that a way to establish credibility is through intelligence. He wrote about how you can express intelligence on a subject through having  an experience and/or special knowledge on it. In my case, I had a personal experience that I wanted to share, establishing my own credibility to present this day to an audience of people who were not there on the bike ride themselves. For this project, there may not be any opposing viewpoints as it is just a recollection of events on this day.

Project 5 Outline

Outline for Video 5:

  • Our 14 mile bike ride.
  1. Devyn and I tell all of our friends about how we biked 14 miles in this class on one day.
  2. Made us feel empowered and like we could do anything.
  3. Biked all down Market Street with our playlists. – I ran out of good songs to play that’s how long I felt we were biking.
  4. Passed the thingy that counts how many bikers ride by.
  5. Talk about how close we felt to the cars and busses
  6. Kyle takes a tumble.
  7. Humphry Slowcombre chain our bikes all together- we get brown butter ice cream
  8. Workers were frustrated- Devyn held tiger
  9. Bike down to bow and arrow look at bridge- we can ride on sidewalk
  10. Rode by the water
  11. Get at UCSF
and met the Dr. Doug Bauer
  12. Discussed arthritis and bikers
  13. Professor Hunt asked me to explain my project on evidence to Dr. Doug Bauer.
  14. We started our journey back
  15. Can’t remember that  much about it because we were tired
  16. There was a street where the lights would change at certain time intervals so bikers would not have to wait.
  17. Pushed bike up the hill to USF because we were so tired.
  18. Bragged to everyone about our journey.

Project 5 Audience Post

The audience that I hoped to reach was anyone who was not there to experience our 14-mile bike ride. I wanted to share a unique experience that only the students of our Speaking of Bicycles class shared. For many outside people, they do not understand the significance of this particular day because they were not there to see themselves. No one else can understand how we felt as every student has their own bike skill-level, so sharing two perspectives provides some insight on this day. It was my favorite day of biking in the city so I hope to inspire others to embark on a journey similar to ours!

Project 5 Write Out

Hey what’s up? It’s your favorite YouTube Duo. Lexie and Devyn! (emphasize YouTube voice in intro). We are going to talk about our 14-mile bike ride! We will discuss some highlights! We chose to talk about this because this bike ride has been our favorite topic of discussion! We would tell all of our friends about that one time we rode 14 miles! This bike ride was empowering and liberating! We biked down market street. As we biked down Market Street, we noticed that there were no barriers between the bikes and cars and buses, so we got pretty close with them. But luckily we all got off pretty well! Except for our dear friend Kyle, who took a little tumble. So our good professor, Professor Jonathan Hunt, once said that when there are these cable car tracks, it is very important to walk your bike across them! As they are pretty dangerous. Yet Kyle did not listen to Professor Hunt’s warning and he thought he would be able to ride over them, resulting in a disaster! It’s okay because he got back up and pretended it didn’t happen! But unfortunately since Lexie and I are slow, we were in the back and saw it happen. We ended up being rewarded with some Humphrey Slowcombre ice-cream right after though. Before we could go in, we chained up all of our classmates’ bikes together. In our class, we have learned how to properly lock up a single bike, but now we learned how to lock up many bikes! And our whole class got ice-cream! After, we biked the bow and arrow, and rode on the sidewalk across the bridge. We then went to UCSF to listen to Dr. Doug Bauer talk about his research on arthritis and its relation to bicyclists and people as they age. He mentioned that it was part of his job to generate evidence which was an interesting point as we have been mostly collecting evidence in class. An overall enriching experience! We also related this back to our evidence gathering in the Panhandle and how these skills can be beneficial for our future careers. Then we embarked on our journey back to school, which was longer than expected. It was worth it, we hope you guys join us on our next ride! Thanks for watching! Speaking Center Post #3

For my third Speaking Center visit, I came to the Gleeson Library more prepared than my previous visits. I also had the same Speaking Center coach that I got on my first time there, so I was already comfortable and familiar with her. I had not already written my speech yet, but instead I came with all of the ideas and information that I wanted to incorporate into the speech. My coach, Monique, helped me organize my ideas on a whiteboard. I chose to ask my aunt and uncle questions on their experience in the AIDS Lifecycle, so she helped me organize my speech based on their questions. We went over all of the aspects of my speech thoroughly so that I would try to not be completely dependent on a script like all of my other speeches. I think it was my best visit because I felt more confident and accomplished as I was genuinely excited to share the information in my speech with the class because I want us ALL to to the ride together!

YouTube Voice Post

After reading the article on YouTube voices, it was really brought to my attention how subtle details carry effect. For example, whenever watching videos on YouTube I never really payed close attention to the manner of the speaker’s voice. So after reading the article, I watched John Green’s YouTube video, “Understanding the Refugee Crisis in Europe, Syria, and around the World.” When watching this video I was particularly attentive to John Green’s body language especially. He appeared to be bouncing in his seat and just generally restless, which draws the audience’s attention. He also speaks very quickly, but conversationally with the camera. Despite the speed of his words, John Green does not use complicated words or jargon when explaining the political situation. John Green is able to break down his message with easy, understandable words so that his audience, just the average American, can comprehend what he is communicating. It was an overall cool video, thanks Mr. Green!!!

Speaking Center Post

For my second speaking center visit, I intended on delivering my speech and debriefing it, but since we did not end up presenting on Tuesday before, I was given extra time to prepare it. I gave my speech to my speaking center coach and realized that I felt uncomfortable with the google slides presentation I had prepared. I also found myself not having being as confident as I would have liked to be while delivering my speech. In order to fix both of those issues, my coach had me repeatedly rehearse my speech. To gain more confidence, I just had to practice several times to be comfortable with my information that I was sharing. With knowing all of my information for my speech, all I had to do was improve the delivery. My coach also helped me figure out how to make my transitions and incorporation of slides smoother and less awkward. Once we got past finding smooth transitions, I was ready for my speech, thanks to my coach Chloe Jones!

Speaking Center Post 1

On Monday, I had my first appointment in the speaking center with my coach, Monique Miranda. I had nothing prepared for my speech except interview questions from my did, which I planned on making the main topic of my speech. I went to the Speaking Center for some form of guidance with my speech since I was completely unsure of what I wanted to do yet. So first with my coach, we took the most important, or interesting, points of the interview with my dad. From there we outlined and organized the points in order and found two articles from our class, “Using and Citing Evidence to Construct and Support Arguments” By Joseph Zompetti and “Understanding Data Visualization” By Krista Schnell. With those two articles, I related the ideas from the interview. My coach also encouraged me to make my google slides presentation as a visual aid for my speech. I was hesitant at first because I was not sure how I could smoothly incorporate a visual aid into my project, but ultimately we figured it out. This was an overall enriching meeting and really helped me with my speech.

Project 2 Write-Out Post

Good afternoon, I am Devyn Nguyen and I am a business major, so I decided to analyze the application of evidence in the business world. Evidence is an integral part of business, which I learned from my dad. My dad is actually in business himself, which inspired me in selecting my major. With my dad as a business owner, I was able to interview him as an outside source to understand how evidence works in his own workplace.

First on the following slide, I will begin to explain a bit of my dad’s background, his name is Kenny Nguyen and he is a part owner of 2 businesses, one being a small gym. After being a part of the business world for many years, he has acquired experience in obtaining information and evidence.

For example, on the next slide i show how my dad explained to me that he gains information internally and externally, doing so by himself at first, then with a team. He also expressed the importance of calculating decisions based on research, or due diligence, which are precautionary steps taken before making a big business decision.

On the next slide, I will Relate to the texts we have read for our class. An example is “Using and Citing Evidence to Construct and Support Arguments,” by Joseph Zompetti, my dad also has similar tactics regarding viable evidence. Zompetti discussed the power in utilizing statistics in portraying information as it aids the audience in “visualizing an abstract concept.” When interviewing my dad, he shared an identical view as he explained that “numbers don’t lie.” Numbers and stats can be very convincing in making the audience understand the reality of the situation being presented to them. An example to illustrate this idea of applying numbers is one Zompetti provides, saying either: 80% of all Ugandan children are conscripted into the Ugandan army versus “many children” are apart of the Ugandan army. By using a statistic, or a percentage, the information being presented has a stronger impact on the audience. Naturally, numbers have are extremely effective in convincing an audience.
(explain that the man is Joseph zompetti in pic)

On the next slide, I present Another text, “Data Visualization” by Krista Schnell which is also relatable to my dad’s interview. In Schnell’s text, her and her colleague explain that “data alone is meaningless.” In order for data to be understood in more depth, a speaker should illustrate their message to their audience.(IN THE SLIDE THERE IS A BUNCH OF DATA IN WORDS VS A. GRAPH DEPICTING THE INFORMATION THATS EASIER TO COMPREHEND). Also for another example my dad discussed the importance in creating presentations to market or promote a product. Another example of data visualization are apps such as Microsoft Excel. Any other business major has experienced this example first hand, as we use this in real-life with our very own Business Statistics class! In this math class we are required to use Microsoft excel with our lessons.
Anyways, Since we are in a bicycling class, I have one last point to make on the next slide, regarding my dad collecting information and evidence for his business! My dad considered different variables when choosing stationary bikes for his gym with his partners to find bikes with a modern and unique workout experience. After talking to clients, gaining information through questions, he decided to go with bikes that felt like real bikes to mimic bicycling outdoors.

In conclusion, There are many different ways to apply evidence techniques to the real-world in a variety of situations. I found that these 2 articles related most to what my dad had explained to me through his own experience in working in business. After exploring these applications of evidence and information, I have learned that these techniques are transferable and applicable to many real-life situations. so Thank you!
