Question

  1. What skills you may learn & develop when working on this assignment (essay 4)?
  2. What challenges you may face when working on it?
  3. How you plan to organize your essay?

Answer

  1. What I may learn and develop are: summarizing multi-page text and synthesize information from multiple related texts, both orally and in writing (reading), paraphrasing, quoting, and citing skills. (academic skills), skill of using the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing) in a multiple draft assignment, to improve iterations (writing), follow with skill of writing coherent texts with topic sentences and supporting details in order to describe, narrate, report and inform (writing), skill to make an argument using different types of support (e.g., description, narration, report, inform)(writing), and finally the skill to recognize and correct some common grammatical and mechanical errors in written texts (writing).
  2. The challenges that I may face might be to combine all different sources together, in order to make one good essay organization, explaining all the important aspects regarding the topic. Other than that, I am looking forward for this assignment, since the topic is relevant and also crucial nowadays.
  3. My plan for the essay’s organization would be to follow the APA format, begin with introduction, body, and conclusion. In the introduction part, I will briefly explain the thesis statement with transition to the body. In the body, I would explain the topic with points and include visuals to support each point, and finally to conclusion. I want to make it simple yet effective, powerful, and understandable for the readers.

Ini Kisah Tiga Dara ( The Story of Three Dara )

The Story of Three Dara is an Indonesian musical drama directed by Nia Dinata, a very famous Indonesian film director, and was released on September 1, 2016. The film is inspired by the musical drama of Indonesian legendary director Usmar Ismail’s Three Dara. This film has the same story theme with Three Dara, but there are some story changes to adjust the present condition, specifically about women.

Synopsis

Ever since the mother died, Three Dara were brought by their father, Krishna, to east of Flores in a small seaside town. They built a beautiful boutique hotel, to continue the ideals of the mother. Gendis (32), the first child, has a passion for cooking. All her energies are devoted to culinary affairs. Ella, 28, who is both sociable and friendly, choose to be the head of the public relations and marketing department. Bebe (19), the third child, intelligent, outspoken, and free-spirited. Bebe is also closest to the local people. She often volunteers teaching children in the local elementary school.

Values

The most important aspect of this movie is that it shows the power of women and how women can be leaders in their field of choice. I think this is a very powerful movie, knowing that in Indonesia, inequality can still be seen, even though the majority of the society already knows how women should be seen and treated ideally. However, this film represents Indonesian women as a driving force to success in achieving balance in life. Each female character has their own unique gift, but most importantly they are not limited by stereotypes and conservative thinking, making them equal as men, and equal to deserve the very best things in life as a human being. In conclusion, this movie represents women power and also a proof that women are subjects and leaders, not an object by any means.

ACTIVITY 1

For a long time, my stepson, Jonathan, was unhappy to have me as part of his family, for he resented that he didn’t have both biological parents at home. I tried to get to know him better, but he would complain that I invaded his privacy. As a newcomer, I understand that our relationship requires effort from both of us. It was not enough that I was friendly. Jonathan also has to want us to be friends, and I am not happy with the two of us being strangers, but I can wait for him to feel more comfortable around me.

ACTIVITY 2

Anne Marie collects antique bottles and loves to turn them into works of art. She will buy bottles if she likes them, but she prefers to find them in the ground. She will find bottles everywhere, but she picks them selectively. However, she has the best luck at construction sites on old farmland, where she spends most of her time. Often, bottles appear on the surface after a good rain, but they disappear very soon. She will use special tools for excavating bottles, including a set of brushes. She does not want to break the bottles as she removes them from the ground. After finding a new bottle, Anne Marie will add it to her display case and hangs on the wall as an artistic piece (Mangelsdorf, 2013, p. 411)

In Malaysia’s culture, they do not have limitation on roles in terms of having a career. Both men and women can pursue their career as an individual. Knowing that Malaysia is a Moeslim country, marriage equality is still banned and illegal to perform, according to their laws and policies that are based on Islamic culture. Also, the society itself cannot accept this condition, so it is still very different compared to Solnit’s essay “More Equal Than Others.”

In Indonesia, traditionally, men are responsible in financial aspect to support their family, and women tend to do the household work. As time goes by, both men and women have the same right to pursue their career nowadays. There are a lot of women, supporting their family by doing full-time or part-time job. In terms of marriage equality, since Indonesia is dominated by the influence of Islam, it is still taboo and unacceptable to perform an official same-sex marriage. However, nowadays, there are a lot of people expressing themselves as gay or lesbian, and it is acceptable in the society. What is illegal is only the official marriage equality, not into details of forbidding individuals to express their sexual preferences in public.

Qinfen Chen’s essay (Flora)

From her response, the main idea that she is trying to convey is how the essence of culture always strive to a positive purpose in life. She mentioned that in Chinese culture, it is a common phenomenon where the grandparents take responsibility for their grandchildren, and the parents are responsible for making money and fulfill their children’s live expenses. She also mentioned the contrast between new and old generation in terms of ways of thinking. She believes that as a new generation, we should set aside our selfish thought on life and we should always learn the moral values that our elders taught us, which are kindness and hardworking attitude to become a better person in our life. Personally, I think it is a really good way of thinking, knowing that every culture has their own essential values. In this modern age, those aspects can also be a reminder for us that we should never forget where we came from, because family and cultural aspects shaped us as a character, but most importantly, those aspects always lead us to a better purpose in life.
