Peer Analysis Project 2

This time around we were able to present in a controlled environment such as the classroom. I made the most of situation and used hand gestures whenever I could, and projected my voice at points I wanted to emphasize. Though a mistake I realized as I was presenting was that I had no visuals, and if you had no visuals you would have to portray your speech very strong through word choice or tone of voice. I had neither, so right away my speech was really bland. The positives of presenting in a classroom is that you’ll be allowed to use tools such as a projector. On my part, that was my bad for not considering creating a google slides to go along with my speech. The positive about being in a classroom was that my voice was a lot easily to hear, the con thought was being able to hear me doesn’t necessarily mean what I’m saying is interesting or impactful. There is a lot to consider in a speech. For next time around, I’ll be sure to consider  a visual aspect for my speech. For a 2nd speech, I think it was a great learning experience and will make me much more prepared for up and coming projects/presentations.

Peer Analysis Project 1

This presentation was way back in September, however I do remember who presented strongly. From our first presentation at the Conservatory of Flowers, I thought Malia, Oliva, and just anyone who was able to maintain good posture and eye contact with the audience. From my perspective I thought that was unbelievably hard to do. Just looking at our peers presentations taught me the do’s and dont’s of how to present. I learned to try not to entirely rely on notes for a speech, and to use my intuition more. Since you are the most knowledgeable, your objective is to educate your audience with your idea/topic. Another thing to keep in mind while presenting is to not be stiff while not being to fidgety. Using hand gestures is a great way to prevent the other two situations. Last, be sure you are able to project your voice loud enough towards the audience. It is completely useless you have a perfect speech when they can’t even hear you. Especially noting that outside speeches, you definitely need to project a lot louder compared to the echo and silence effect a classroom has on a presentation/speech. This first presentation was a really important learning experience, and will be really beneficial for later on presentations/projects.

Peer Analysis Project 3

Probably the most memorable presentation of that day was Aaron and his love for Salt & Straw. The fact that he had so much passion for the  Salt & Straw community made it quite memorable for me. He goes on more explaining how it is a create environment to work in, especially the waffle making experience as he described. Not only was he able to grow with his coworkers, he gets to meet daily customers and just an overall overwhelming great experience based on the way he described his job. Also Aaron gave us some insight of how each scoop has its own backstory, which I thought was quite interesting as it had must have related personally to the original owners of the company. Was overall a great presentation of the aspects of the Salt & Straw community.

Individual Conference Project 3

Within this meet up, it helped me process what I do with the community presentation. The types of communities I was most knowledgeable of was probably the design, bike, and swim community. Being that I was a design major Professor Hunt proposed me to follow through with a design community presentation. Off of that, I went on explaining the process of how a design community operates. Specifically, I was narrowing down the community to the USF design community. I described it based on my own experience in class and what we did during our projects. To keep it brief, I explained the process of group critiquing others projects, constantly generating digital edits, and refining them based on the critiques we receive from our class.

My experience of this individual meeting with the instructor helped me definitely for this project, as I was struggle to decide on which community to talk about. The fact that it was so open ended with you choosing any topic you desired was great, and made it a lot easier. At the end I wanted to relate my presentation back to bicycles, so I thought I could tie in the USF design community to the bicycle design community. Both of the communities are similar in many ways as, the first sketch of a bike isn’t the one they manufacture right away. It goes through a process of many refinements until it is flawless to go onto the market. Explaining all this one on one with the professor made my project path quite clear. (Firstly talk about my own personal experience of the Design community at USF, and how it all ties together with the bicycle design community.

Individual Conference Project 2

During this time, we briefly talked about my topic mechanical doping. I proposed to talked about the different scandals that go on in the Tour De France other than steroid supplements. I went on explain where I got my sources from, and how it was from a credible source, 60 minutes, and from there I described the story of mechanical doping. A brief segment of the video was an interview with the main who invented the hidden motor within a bike frame. They gave some history of his position and his relatedness to the unethical cheaters of the Tour De France. Later on, I went into detail about how this is becoming a real problem and how there is even video footage of being caught red handed with motorized pedals. Summing it up, my project 2 presentation will be on the topic of mechanical doping, and what its effect on the Tour De France franchise.

SC for Project 3

For project 3, the speaking center was really informative. The instructor have advice using visuals instead of bullets points. It was his preference, but I went along with it, to better my presentation. We went into detail about how the design community at USF, and figured out the best way to portray this group. Especially towards an audience that isn’t experience in this sort of field, so it was important to break it down step by step to get the process across. This community presentation we focused more so on the design community and how everyone benefits off of each other. At the end we summed it all together in other design communities, like what goes into designing a bike frame, etc.

Speaking Center Presentation 4

The speaking center appointment was really useful in my opinion, the instructor and I got a lot done within the short duration. We expanded on an intro, where I introduce a personal story relating to why the US bike infrastructure is a problem. We also went on expanding how my reasons such as comparing the US bike infrastructure to other countries like Denmark and London. Going through statistics and data that I’ve collected, we emphasized more on how to compare the two sides against one another. The write up I presented to him, we brought up facts about how bikes in other cultures are much faster than cars. To wrap up this talk, we summed up my topic with increasing bike infrastructure in the US streets to reduce possible car to bike collisions.

Self Assessment/Reflection for Project 3

After going through two mediocre presentations, I think I finally hit one that I really stuck to what I was trying to improve on these past weeks. Even I was initially expecting to present in a classroom environment, I didn’t quite mind being outside. The presentation definitely helped me throughout my presentation as I didn’t solely have to focus on my just my speaking. Have references, I had more to talk about and it being a topic about myself personally made it as easy as telling a story.  Despite all my pros, there are still several cons. At the time, what I would of probably wanted to work on was my voice projection. Since it was outside, my voice wasn’t as clear as it would of been compared to a classroom setting. Also every now and then I would likely stumble on my words, but it was easy able to recover from it by just referencing to my slides. All in all I felt like this was one of my better presentations.

Discussion of Sources for Project 3

The sources I used for Project 3 was my own personal work from my graphic class at USF. I shared my experience and projects that we completed and went through a step by step process of how we get our work done in class. I gave a general gist of what we do in class, such as the critiques. I explain how each of us have our own ideas on paper, but we generate new ideas off of others opinions and perspectives, so working in a group really opens up the possibilities of what you are able to create. Not only is this my first class, but back in high school I had taken a similar course where we did projects and group critiques. In general all of the sources are either from my past or currently in class experiences.

Community, a group of people that come together to share a common interest together. Example of groups are people such as the hype beast community, the book club community, and the biggest of them sports communities.

What I’m particularly going to be talking about is the Design community and we function together. From my personal experience of the design community at USF is that we do this thing called critiques. We hang up our sketched artwork against a wall, and go down one by one giving each other feedback on what to improve on. Based on the feedback you get, you use that to your advantage to make it more and more improved until a finalized project is done.

For our first project in this class we did an Iconography project, which is pretty much similar to those apps you see on your phone. However, our project was specifically on a person of our choosing who had made a contribution to the history of San Francisco. Out of several choices, I settled on Isidore Boudin, the founder of the Boudin Bakery at Fisherman’s Wharf.

I went through the step of how the art process went from rudimentary sketches to a digital layout, to back to back critiques and computer modifications to the digital drafts. This process is repeated through continuous edits, where it is refined until it is finalized. At the end of my slides, I sum up how there is a design community for bikes; such as the designs of handle grips and bicycle frames.
