Topic:
No smoking in public

In order to create a beautiful and comfortable living environment, I think smoking should be banned in public places. Secondhand smoke may cause health problems for others, and smoking in public places may also cause safety hazards. For example, smoking in elevators may trigger the smoke alarm. At the same time, guests in elevators may be allergic to nicotine. If you smoke in a crowded place, you may burn yourself or others. I think more smoking areas can be set up in some public places, so that people who need to smoke can smoke safely without disturbing others.

I read Ruki Zhao’s blog and found it very interesting. What they have in common with our group is that the speaker chooses a topic that is very interesting, and an interesting topic will attract more audiences. In addition, the speaker focuses on PPT to help his audience better understand the theme of the speech. At the same time, the speaker did not use difficult academic words in his speech, but used simple and understandable words, which made it easier for readers to understand what the speaker was talking about. Sometimes, giving a speech that is more accessible will make you look more professional.

I especially like this speech, although the speaker don’t have too  much body movements, but obviously, her eyes are  watched every audience, the lecturer spoke very slow, it can be clear for all to hear his speech, at the same time also can have more time to think about the speaker’s words. Perhaps because she was an actress, I could hear in her tone that she knew the subject she was going to talk about, and her expression could tell me that this was a very serious matter.

Although I write differently for other people, it may be that the version of my book is different.
But what I’ve learned from Aditya Kumar and Hang Yang is that adding pictures to your presentation, for example, can give your audience a more intuitive understanding of what you’re thinking.
Second, adding pauses to your presentation will not only give your audience a brief moment to relax and focus on what you’re going to say later, but also give them time to think about what you’ve just said.

The part I saw was how to write a good argument. First of all, you need to know enough about your subject so that you have more arguments to prove your point and make your audience believe what you are saying. The second is to understand the counterpoint to your topic so that you can learn what you need to learn more about yourself. Add a few counter-arguments to your essay in the right amount, and it will appear that your opinions are even more restrictive, because nothing in the world is perfect.

A. Directions: Read the following scenarios and decide whether it is a case of plagiarism or
not. (Y or N) and explain why.
__N___ 1. Kyoko needs to write a report on American politics. She looks up Barack Obama in
Wikipedia and discovers he is the 44th president of the United States. She includes this
information in her report but doesn’t mention Wikipedia.
___Y__2. Tam is writing a paper on a novel for his English class. Since the whole class is reading
the same book, he doesn’t need to use a citation.

Because your readers may not know that book
___N__3. Sugi wrote a paper for his European history class last semester and got an A on the
paper. This semester, his Political Science class is addressing some of the same issues that are in
his History paper. He checks with his professor first who agrees with Sugi, so he uses the
material from his History paper.
___Y__4. Ramiro, Stephan, April, and Chris are working on a group project. Chris submits his
work and the others suspect that some of it came from the Internet, but it sounds good, so they
submit it.
___Y__5. Maria finds a lot of good information for her paper on the Internet. She carefully
changes the wording and prepares a good paraphrase. She doesn’t copy anything verbatim.
B. Directions: Decide whether the information described in each scenario will require
citation of the source (Y or N) and explain why.
___Y__1. You clearly identify the source at the beginning of a paragraph that summarizes the
author’s ideas about teenage drinking. Since readers will naturally assume all of the ideas in
the paragraph are from the source, no additional citation is necessary.

Because your readers may not know where you’re coming from
__N___2. In your paper on the history of aviation you state the date of the Wright brothers’ first
successful flight at Kitty Hawk.

Because your readers may not know where you’re coming from
__N___3. In a paper on the civil rights movement you find some general, well-known background
information in an encyclopedia. It is obviously common knowledge, so you copy the
information and include it in your paper.
___N__4. You ask your mother about the steps she went through in obtaining a bank load for a
new car. You include this information in your paper.
__Y___5. You skim a 325-page book entitled Using the Internet. A major theme throughout the
book is that the Internet is an important technological achievement. You include this in your
paper.
__Y___6. You find an article that takes the same position you have taken on the subject of gun
control. To save time you summarize in your paper a portion of the argument from the article,
since the author’s ideas are identical to your own.

My point is very similar to Hang Yang’s, we both wrote about how images change your audience’s point of view.

MeijingZhao suggests that a relatively new idea is that images can also capture the audience’s attention and make them more interested in continuing to read.

I particularly like a bot that follows on Twitter and shares some cute animal comics. Every time I saw the comics post by him I will be very exciting, and they had a production company that regularly sent out the cartoons and made money selling the goods that have their comics character on it. On their page, they have their company’s web site, and their production team.

In Essay2 I plan to find a controversial topic in the magazine or recent news and use some data to prove my point. While explaining why the author put forward this opinion, I will also put forward some of my views and find some credible evidence to support this opinion. Then write down why I was attracted to the article, analyze why the title of the article is attractive, whether the article is easy to read, what age group of readers the author chooses and what occupation he works for.

  1. Choose a controversial piece of news- https://chicago.suntimes.com/entertainment-and-culture/2020/3/2/21160890/tiktok-teens-video-app-social-media-lifestylesRecently, there has been a lot of discussion about Tik Tok being banned in the United States. In this video, the author use animation to show all kinds of strange behaviors of cats, and use some examples of cats living in the wild to explain why cats have these strange behaviors. The whole video is cute, but it also explains that cats see the world differently from humans. For example, cats like to sharpen their claws, because they need to hunt in the wild, so they need to grind their claws into a specific shape. This creates an ideological connection for the audience.
