Growing up in the time period that I did, there has been a lot of controversy, over peoples beliefs in almost every aspect. The one social movement, that I am very curious about is about the equal rights of women. Why do women in today’s society feel that they aren’t equal to their male counterparts? Certainly I wouldn’t be asking this question 100 years ago because it’s evident on how women weren’t portrayed to be equal. They didn’t have the right to vote, most jobs weren’t open for women, and many things were frowned upon if they were done by a women. This makes me very curious to find out why women of today feel the way that they do.

What is feminism? What do feminists stand for? These question would make a very solid point in my essay for why today’s women feel the oppression that they do. I would like to know specifically what feminism is, and what feminists believe in. Even though my research will only be focusing on the American Women, I believe it is important to know how other Americans opinions very based on their region. For example I believe that the opinion of someone from North California, would be different from someone from South Carolina.

The 2012 Pulitzer Prize Winner in Feature Photography, was awarded to Craig F. Walker of The Denver Post. The image introduced is of a former U.S. Marine, Scott, watching a lightning storm from his apartment and reminisces about the times he would have died while over seas. Scott, like many other veterans, is having a hard time transitioning to civilian life, and is battling against Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While watching the storm Scott stated, “I’m just feeling guilty about the things I did. I was a brutal killer, and I rejoiced in it. I was bred to be a killer, and I did it. Now I’m trying to adapt and feel human again. But to feel human, I feel guilty. I did horrible things to people… That’s why I can’t eat: I feel guilty, I feel sick.”

The argument being addressed through this photo is many veterans need our help transitioning into civilian lives. This photograph is addressing ones’ pathos because it makes you feel sympathetic for Scott, and gives the viewer a sense of compassion to help other struggling veterans. 

 

1. With the high cost of tuition packed on top of a low standard of living, college students shouldn’t have to pay for vaccinations.
2. With illegal immigrants having such a high cost of health care, it is an important issue for the wholeness of protecting peoples lives.
3. The spotted owls in our area need to be protected because their population is decreasing at an extreme rate.
4. Cigarette taxes should be raised because smoking related deaths is growing within the general population.
5. Standardized testing a bad idea because not everybody us able to know the same amount of information required to be successful.

There’s this film that we watched in my anthropology class called ‘Eagle Huntress’ and it’s about a young girl who lives in Mongolia and was taught how to hunt using a Golden Eagle. Her father, as well as grand father were both the only eagle hunters within their family, so she becomes the first female eagle huntress within her family. Then later becomes the champion in the Eagle tournament amongst many other eagle hunters from all over Mongolia, and they’re predominately all male.

This shows equality because a women, yet alone a 11 year old girl, can do the same things that men can do. This is a more cultural thing opposed to the western society, but most of these eagle hunters have been hunting and training with eagle 5 times longer than she has even been alive. So in the end when she turns to be the victor, it is a true demonstration of equality amongst gender.

1.) For a long time my stepson, Jonathan, was unhappy to have me as part of his family; he resents that he doesn’t have both of his biological parents at his home. It isn’t enough to be friendly.

2.) Anne Marie collects antique bottles and loves to turn them into works of art. She finds bottles everywhere, but she picks them selectively.

Idioms:

The window is broken and Joseph is no where to be seen, something is fishy here. He should really take the bull by the horns and confess that he is the one who did it. Just like how his favorite baseball player did, Mariano Reveria, he hurt his knee one year by horsing around in the outfield during BP, and owned up to it immediately. After Bill got laid off by his job, he had to sell his car, no he really doesn’t have a leg to stand on because it is his window that Joseph broke. Did we really jump the gun on this one, it turns out Joseph was at his friends house, he never broke the window.

In the article, “BC-BBO–Juiced Baseballs?”, Ronald Blum discusses how their is currently a conspiracy about baseballs being ‘juiced’ which causes them to be hit out easier to be hit out of the ball park. Blum states that this year in the 2017 World Series, their has been a record of 22 home runs hit by the Houston Astros, and the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 7 game series; the most amount ever hit in a World Series.  The commissioner of Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred, “denies anything nefarious is going on” (Blum, 2017, p. 1). based off of statements of the baseballs being ‘juiced’. After game 6 the starting pitcher of the Houston Astros, Justin Verlander, claimed how “the balls are slicker” (Blum, 2017, p. 1).

Certain cultures believe in their own ways of intreppretting things. Jokes are a very big apart of many cultures because everyone universally loves laughter. Although some jokes made be misunderstood by those who believe it to be offense. For example, one family with their own customs may make a joke that others claim to be.

1. The reality show follows the lives of Bruce, and Kris Jenner’s combined family. Most of the episodes focused on the three oldest daughters: Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe Kardashian.
2. Bruce Jenner was famous for breaking the world record and winning a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1976 Olympics. His sons from a previous marriage, Brandon, and Brody, have also appeared on their own reality shows.
3. The Kardashians’ father, the late attorney Robert Kardashian, was famous for representing O.J. Simpson. HIs daughters gained recognition as American socialites.
4. Kim came into the national spotlight in 2007 after a sex-tape scandal resulting in a Playboy appearance. The Kardashian fame grew into a profitable reality series.
5. The show depicts the daily routine of the Kardashians. Spin-off shows featuring Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe’s attempts to build their line of fashion boutiques.

The Dream Act was drawn up for illegal immigrants to bring their children into the United States safely, so they wouldn’t have to worry about deportation for themselves or their families; as well as their children getting the proper education they need to have a successful future. “The act was first introduced on August 1, 2001, by Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin and former Utah Republican Senator and current President Pro Tempore Orrin Hatch (Herszenhorn).” (183).

In 2010 one of the most recent votes about the Dream Act resulted with the bill receiving 41 votes against, 55 votes for, while 4 senators abstained from voting. In order for the Dream Act Bill to become legal; it would have required at least 60 votes approval. Arguments against the Dream Act are: “One of the components being that the act promotes unjust ideals.” (184). This quote translated to me means that the senators who oppose this Bill oppose it because it gives a sense of unrealistic dreams of coming to America. Dreams much more unrealistic than what the ‘American Dream’ is actually suppose to represent.
