With children spending time online at younger and younger ages, it’s vital that we explicitly teach young children how to protect themselves online. introduce the idea that strangers exist on the internet and to discuss how we should interact with them. These interactions can range from how do we leave comments on peoples blogs, to how do we deal with someone being nasty to us online. Also internet safety gives students the ability to learn how to deal with/ avoid cyberbullying. The resources required to teach the lesson are simply a computer and internet access, and it’s helpful to have a projector or interactive whiteboard
The three main concerns when addressing internet safety are: teaching children how to handle strangers in real life compared to those in virtual environments. Second, teaching kids that not all strangers mean danger in an online setting as that hurts collaboration. In todays world a lot of group work happens over the internet and getting students comfortable with internet based collaboration is important for their future success. Lastly, how do students deal with threats from online when they are not able to run away from it or escape as they could in the real world. The digital world is something that is always with us, in our homes and bedrooms, and its important to teach kids either how to ignore or turn that world off.
