I chose a speech delivered by Seth Nishiyama and the title was Nap Time. The speech is about how nap time can make you more effective in school or at work. Generally, the way that he introduces the content is easy to understand and follow and also the topic can benefit us, students. His volume is good and his voice is clear. The best part of his speech is gestures and body movements. When he explains how it benefits, he uses his finger to make 1,2,3 to make audience easy to follow. And also he walked to the other side when he goes to the next slide which is very natural and makes audience pay more attention to him.

Jasper, Runze

After I read Jasper’s response, I found that we have similar point that both of us feel intrigued about. That is the author Dick Gregory felt shameful to be fooled in front of the girl that he loved. And Jasper also said Gregory is trying to use shame to tell the reader that he was shamed for being black because what he experienced that he wrote is all because of racism. And the author uses the symbol shame to call out people that stop racism. And also we both think what he really needed was to care for him.

And Runze is interested in the way Community Chest donation works. Each student will get some money from their dad and they will bring it to school on Monday. The reason that he is interested in it is that he didn’t experience such thing before.

I read Jasper’s response. I found that we have different idea with one important thing that makes an argument more effective. For Jasper, he thinks to understand the purpose of the paper is more effective and he gives his own example. For the essay 3, Jasper chose the same topic with the speech that he had done before. However, the purpose of the past speech and the argument for essay 3 is totally different. For the past speech, he mainly focused on solving food insecurity for college students, but for this time, his purpose is to solve food insecurity for those who suffered through the pandemic. I think it is a good example of different purpose of the past purpose and the current purpose, even though their topic is the same. And for me, I think good interaction with audiences is also important. According to the reading, successful presenters always use a lot of body languages and have many eye contacts with audiences. I agree with that. When I was listening to other’s speech in a past class, I felt that I paid more attention on those who used many gestures and had as much eye contact as they could than those who was delivering a speech with only standing there and speaking like reading a book.

For the Forbes article, Jasper likes the first strategy, Know what you want, because it is pretty similar to knowing the purpose. And I found that to persuade audiences, understanding audiences position is very helpful to convince them.

I read Chris’s response, I have one the same example with Chris that I think very effective, which is Emma’s speech. Both of us think silence has power of drawing audience’s attention. Chris has one more idea towards the silence. It gives audience time to think about the argument and reflect themselves. So it is a powerful strategy to address the main point. Chris also gives his personal experience based on that. He said he was always bored to the beginning ceremony of every new semester because it is mandatory and almost fell asleep. However, when the speaker didn’t speak for several seconds, he would know that it would come to an important announcement, so he would listen to him carefully. And the school might know the strategy, so they use silence to make students pay attention on their speech.

And the other example that we chose different one is that Juliana’s presentation with a strong introduction and conclusion of Chris and my Martin Luther King Jr’s speech with parallelism and repetition.

10/28 reflection on essay 2 comments

After receiving Professor’s feedback, I found that I didn’t mention the author’s full name of the argument that I did the rhetorical analysis and where it is published which is a big mistake that I made, so next time, I will give full information of an argument or an article in the passage. When I say words like high authority, I need to explain how he or she has high authority instead of only writing a sentence like “The author has a highly expected authority.” For this problem, I will take to give other sources, such as listing what books the author has written, or what researches the expert has been done, to show the fact. Moreover, I have some in-text citation problems in APA format, so I will go over that later to fix it. The most important part is that I hardly analyzed the author’s ethos and pathos. Therefore, it would be the part that I will take the most care of next time to focuse more on ethos and pathos.

After reading Jasper’s response, he has the same idea with me on the article, “Shared Experiences of Multiethnic Children in Stealing Buddha’s Dinner”, which is mainly talking about the story of being a child of a multiethnic family. The author is trying to call people who are with multiethnic families to accept each aspect of their family cultures and don’t deny each other. Unlike me, Jasper has a related experience on it. He had a chance to stay in a traditional American family, and he had a wonderful host family during his high school year in Bakersfield. They always talked about their culture difference between Chinese and American. Whenever they asked Jasper which country he likes more, Jasper always said both China and America. He can accept differences very well. He explains that the reason that he likes both of them is because every country has their own aspects that makes itself unique. He was really happy that he could have opportunity to have two different cultures. Therefore, Jasper and I likes Paula Mirando’s point.

when I was in high school in china, there was a policy which is no electric devices. especially phones. I don’t like the rule and it is not good for students’ convenience. I think I can give some suggestion with some alternated rules. At least we can have phone during break time. when we go home we need phones, when we search for information we need phones when we contact with someone we need phones sometimes there may be emergency happen so your mom needs to call you but if you don’t have phone you will miss it.

I read Chris’ response. We have a different intriguing point. In Chris’ point, one thing intriguing him is that Mrs. Gonzalez, the Mexican friend, has the same value as the grandma. They think working hard will lead to a better future. Mrs. Gonzalez needs to get up very early and make dumplings to sell to support her family and she also needs to take care of grandbabies which is the same as Grandma Wong. And this situation is the same as Chinese people, so he is moved by this.

And what I feel interesting is something like grandma Wong’s faith. She doesn’t like others to say some negative words, especially on New Year, because she believes it will bring bad luck to them. For this point, Chris has the same idea as me. He noticed that when grandma Wong explains why a dish is called the Phoenix web, but actually it is duck web, at this point, we can find Chinese culture. People in China love to give a name with a good sound because they believe it brings good luck to people.

Hang Yang, Jie Shi, Meijing Zhao

I have similar ideas with my groupmates Hang and Jie. Pictures can reflect people’s ideas in a clearer and more vivid way, and it can be a good way to trigger emotions.

We use many different examples on visual rhetoric. For Hang, he gives advertisements as examples. When we are walking on the street or looking at the phone, we are receiving many information from it. Then these ideas will get stronger in our minds. It’s a kind of ethos. Jie gives Facebook as an example said that Facebook users always upload different images to present a thing. I give a picture from NASA as an example, the small Earth seen on the moon well contributes to the idea, which is From space, we are one world. Also, I gave my personal experience. when I was little, I always read books with images in it, because it is more interesting than only characters in it.

To create an image, Jie said you need to be clear about the media you are using idea and also who your intended audience is, and the point your image is making, which are the same ideas with mine.
