“After Digital Storytelling: Video Composing in the New Media Age”

What I learnt: -Only running through texts and only images may not be as affective for the audience…

Candice: She tried to find common grounds between her and her mother where at first, there wasn’t really anything, but when she tried mix matching things together, it became more interesting and insightful. (In the beginning, she had a perspective and different viewpoint of her mother, but then later on, she found and discovered motivation and specific common grounds in order to develop her writing and ideas.

All in all, I found it really helpful after reading the essay (pages 44-49) because I got the chance to learn from both Katie and Candice. I am able to notice the disadvantages and advantages of each tool and combine them when I come to working on my video essay.

(Week 4) September 11 – In-class Free Writing

There are so many ideas that I want to throw into my audio essay. It ranges from stating the main purpose of why I will be choosing this particular topic for my audio essay to what has influenced me to keep exploring that topic and many more. I am planning and willing to explore many literacy narrative ideas and also, I really want to combine lots of them together and even create “links”.

My audio essay will particularly be based on why I feel that everyone should be treated equally in term of receiving education and its stages. Throughout my life, I have been exposed to ‘Education’ a lot. ‘Education’ in terms of curriculum in many countries especially my home country, Bangkok Thailand. I am not really talking about Education in terms of the amount of Education I have received throughout my life or even my academic, but instead it’s about me, who has seen a lot such as children in an orphanage receiving education, government and politicians trying their very best to provide the best education and the best curriculum they can to children without a lot of privileges.

Breaking up my essay plan:

Beginning – Really focus on the main idea I want to illustrate in my audio essay

– An really good introduction (/topic sentence) that explains and introduces my main idea which is based on Education

– Start making links and connections to what influenced me to choose this topic for my audio essay

Middle – Start explaining each stage of the story, how all of it started, who was part of it, who experienced it with me, the main important roles that I had

– Talk about the struggles I had to deal with, who helped me deal with it, how I overcame them

Middle – End

– What I learnt from this experience

– Will I ever get to deal with it again? If yes, how come?

– Will I ever continue or willing to have this kind of experience ever again?

Day 2 (In class writing) – Ming, Kexin, Faye

After skimming through the responses, the ones that we think that stands out most is the person who talked about being a sports player and how he developed his skills. He used environmental sound effects (game sound effects) to his audio essay as well. Those sound effects made the audience and the listener feel that they are involved and part of the situation. Lastly, when he interviewed his coach, he recorded him which made things clearer, more reliable and more accurate.

On the other hand, one of the other responses had rap music involved and also pop culture. However, we feel that the rap music in the backgroud may have disadvantages where it might distract the narrator.

Moreover, this other person used her personal experience with the TOEFL test where she locked herself in the room in the four days ago before the test, the effots made by her helping her to get a satifisy practice grade. However, after registering for another class, the grade gets worse; a mood swing leads her to a low peak. After the self-regulation for a period of time, finally she passed the test. Moreover, the background music and inserted pictures can help the literacies become more vivid, and they all focus more on personal feelings and experiences rather than just telling audiences the story.

Exploring 30th Aug class readings

Similarities

  • We both analysed the fact that learning a new language plays an important role for immigrants. Such as, the long-term study, the pace and the data are some of the issues that they face.
  • The huge educational gap is also an issue that we both figured out. It may be hard for them to form paragraphs and big chunks of text when it is tempting for them to throw in all their ideas.

Differences

  • One of my peer’s were able to share their experiences in full details. She made sure there were links to the question and she didn’t jump off the topic at all. This acted like a back up and it helped support her points and key ideas as well.
