Idioms:

1) “Money talks”: This means that money speaks the way of peoples actions, an example is why a soccer player decides to go to a lower leveled team and division in order to earn more money.

2) “Cough up”: This means coming up with something, an example is coming up with money that you owe someone.

3) “For the birds”: When something is boring to you, can be used when watching an uninteresting TV-show with your girlfriend.

4) “Play it by the ear”: This means to just see/follow what happens instead of having made a plan, an example when going to a festival without having decided which artist to watch that day.

5) “Fishy”: When something is suspicious, can be used when talking about someone walking around the store and looking after cameras and people.

September 20, APA Citation Quotation

The general topic in the introduction of the journal “Counting niqabs and burqas in Denmark: Methodological Aspects of Quantifying Rare and Elusive Religious Sub-cultures,” Warburg, Johansen, & Ostergaard ( 2013) is the proposing ban of face-wearing clothes such as niqabs and burqas.

The proposing is a result of cultural differences, which is showcased in the journal by “For many people in the West, the sight of a woman who wears the niqab is provocative and gives rise to objections and condemnations of various kinds, from concern about the women´s supposed oppression to issues of identification and public safety” (p .33).

This quote explains who the Conservative Party in Denmark wants to ban niqabs and why it is a common topic in many European countries. The diverse cultural understandings of this particular clothing are the reason behind this “popular” topic in Western politics.

What the story is about: what goes through an athletes mind while competing.

What the story is really about: “A tennis match, is life in miniature”.

The story will follow a tennis player’s thoughts during a match. It will present a couple of conflict in terms of how the player has to handle the match (the opponent, his own game, his mind etc.). The problem solving from the player during the match will be reflected on afterward and compared to human nature and everyday situations.

The story will have an introduction meant to catch the audience´s attention. The story is supposed to stand out by being told in a present setting (in action) where the story is told by a first-person narrator. This will hopefully show the authenticness of the story and make it easier for the audience to experience the presented feelings. At the end, there will be a reflection to sum-up the story.

The goal of the story is the give the audience a feeling and clearer understanding of how sports can be related to life in general. Another goal is to make it intense and persuading the feelings of the audience by using audio elements such as music and sound effects. The ultimate goal is to get the audience to reflect on how crazy and beautiful sports are at the same time.

Free writing:

Theme: Tennis(match)

Story: Own experience (gives credibility)

What goes through my mind during matches (starting the match, losing/winning a big point, during/between points, changeovers), superstitions (bottles, balls, numbers), tactics.

This can for some be relatable when playing sports or taking an exam.

Sound effects: Tennis ball, scream/celebration. Background music to affect feelings.

Talk about how you are alone and the tennis court, how a match is not played on time (human biological effect of protecting what you have is not possible as you can not defend a lead).

How physicality plays a big role in tennis and how it alongside experience (reactions/active decision making) has evolved because of for example technology.

End the storytelling so the audience can reflect: Maybe they think about how technology plays an impact on sports, how tennis is compared to other sports or just now know what goes on in the mind of an athlete while competing= Different (maybe bigger joy) while watching sports.

  • Talk about for how long and how many matches I have played: “Every match is different, just as every day in life is different”.
  • Describe the system of a tennis match: How it is different from other sports and what it creates/includes. Use different types of sound effects (clock).
  • Present a match: Tell as if recording while playing the match. Use different types of sound effects (a bouncing tennis ball, scream/celebration), maybe over background music.
  • Reflect on the match compared to tennis, sports and even life in general, “Every match is a life in miniature”.  Possibly include background music.

Kevin Kelso

  • This narrative was good but not great since it was too simple but it was easy to understand.
  • He only used one song and some sound effects and the music itself was too loud

Mitchell Bordage

  • This narrative was more complex and really understand the whole person.(which was able to show how music bonds people together)
  • Was easier to relate too in general
  • Maybe to many different kinds of music –> made it a little confusing at times

Eric Seger

  • He made the narrative different by talking to his mom and using day to day sound effects
  • Though he did not use music and relied on the narrative and sound effects to carry the story

Septemer 4th, In Class Writing

Compose an essay with information about myself with a special focus on identity, race, and culture. Use music and see how it gives the essay a deeper meaning/understanding. Practice using my voice in a way that suits the story.

Main ideas:

  • Use of different music such as Danish, Indian and African (maybe find a mix of the three in the end).
  • What it is about: “Explain” where I am from (cultural, racial and language identity) –> tell my family story (both sides) –> influences on for example food and music.
  • What it is really about: Mix of races and cultures –> “home is family”.

Challenges:

  • A lot of music editing (matching with voice and storytelling).
