Sept 20 APA Citation

Choose a quote to cite: introduce the topic, explain the relevance of that idea; introduce, quote, paraphrase, and analyze.

According to Scott H. Boyd , and M.A Walter, published by 2014. In the first chapter of the article, they introduced solidarity is a often used as a descriptor or a characteristic of competing social cohesion and communality in society, yet it is also a relationship at society and community. We should value the differences highly  and recognize the differences. In contemporary societies, the diversity of religions, politics, and beliefs should not separate us, but rather, tie us and work together as a whole. “Yet as a characteristic of contemporary societies, solidarity is often elusive and subject to contestation, requiring constant remaking, particularly in the contemporary context of social diversity, political and religious difference, and the development of more subjective and diffuse cultures, identities, and “lifeworld” conditions(P. 1).” Therefore, by working together with people that are more opposite than you could help you to develop stronger cultural differences’ knowledge and allow you to have a broader perspective on cultural diversity. That not only can broader your visions of the world, but also make you a better person by learning from others.

What the story is about? How it develops the ideas?

The story is about the struggle that I encountered in learning a new language- English. In my audio essay, I stated all the challenges and obstacles that I faced in everyday activities. Even today, I still don’t feel myself fully belonging to the new community and still trying hard to overcome with these challenges with the positive mentality. I decided to do this topic related to language barrier, because I found it to be interesting to talk about as I am now in the process of experiencing language barrier, I think it would be realistic and sounds personal when I talk about it.

In what ways it indicates some tensions/growth?

It shows maturity at the end of the audio essay. Even though I know I am considered weak as learning a new language, but I won’t give up easily, rather, telling myself to keep trying and think positive. Believing that things can get better if I insist on learning.

What particular learning experiences, cultural understanding it offers to the audience?

I think after people listen to my audio essay, I can encourage them by stating my personal encounters. And not only I confronted this situation, but maybe some of the audiences might feel the same as me and we can relate to each other as well as support each other in our process of learning.

Explaining your experiences of facing issues of identity, culture, and racial stereotypes.
The struggle of learning a new language.
Sometimes i think i can truly express myself only if i am with a group of people who talk in mandarin, which is my first language for me.
Feel illiterate, when i am reading an article, i might strongly feel the same as the author but cannot express my thought as strongly as what I think in my mind when it comes to writing or speaking.
It is always hard and a struggle for me to fully express my thought when i have to use english. I think i am weak at learning a language. I started to learn english when i was in 8th grade, and I have been studied in my home town for my entire life, which mandarin is the dominant language. When reading an article or doing homework, I always have to look up the meaning of the words one by one, and sometimes i feel really tired about doing that, and hope i can be a person who can write, read, and speak fluently. so that i can hold my stance in the situation. Sometimes because of the language barrier, i tend to be accepting and agreeing what people have said even though I am not consent with their thoughts, but because i know it will be hard to explain my thought to people clearly in order to make them understand what I am thinking, so I ended up agree with what i am not agree to.
In high school, I feel frustrated all the time when I received my writing homework back. Because I can always see the comments from the teacher, unclear phrases.
When I realized that everything can be better if my language ability is stronger. See people post things on social media, adapt to a new environment quickly with making new friends easily, get off of the comfort zone.
is the way you communicate with people everyday.

The similarities and differences that I have found from Mindy’s response.

Similarities:

We both agree that immigrant children struggle the most at school, but are sometimes the most hard working.

Identity is defining who you are rather than others’ implications of who you are.

Cultural identity is understanding yourself and where you belong.

Differences:

Based on Mindy’s response, she had point out some uniques perspective to the issues of identity and culture based on her personal experiences, which I did not mention in my response:

She mentioned that she can totally understand the difficulties when facing being asked where are you from because her parents are also immigrants, which she was confused about her own identity when she was a child. She stayed in a place where the dominant language is English, but also have to learn her parents’ native language at the same time.
