“The wage gap between women of color and white men is high, with African American women earning about 67 cents to a white man’s dollar and Latina women earning 62 cents to a white man’s dollar” (Estes, 2018)

Women are becoming to have more power than they used to do. In past, there was time when women did not have rights at all. In some countries, there was a law that allows men to have multiple wives. But recently women seem to have same or even more ability than men. Obviously women can not beat men in physical strength, but women are smart and they get higher education than men. The time when women stay home and be house wives is over, it seems like women are dominating work space and are a lot more helpful than men. Since, women are the ones giving birth to new born, hiring women is much more to deal with. However, they tend to be more loyal to what they get, so I think hiring women is a good choice to make. Women’s jobs used to be prohibited to certain jobs, but nowadays, they are exceeding the boundary and exploring new field of jobs.

As an international student in the U.S, I have taken a bunch of standardized tests prior to applying for schools. I am not a fan of tests, but I would rather take standardized test than other tests we take in college. Personally, I get really nervous when I do not know what to expect for tests. Although standardized tests have different types to it, they all are still categorized same and it is only questions that are different. The standardized tests I have taken were pretty easy to pick up. For high school application, I had to take TOEFL Jr and SLEP tests, these tests are for people who do not speak fluent English, so I just bought books that gives sample questions and I pretty much aced them. For College application, I had to take SAT, ACT, and TOEFL on top of that. TOEFL was much harder than TOEFL Jr or SLEP and I actually had to go to cram school while I was on break and take it a few times to get the score I wanted. SAT and ACT were such an struggle, because these tests are made for people that speak fluent English, and there are science and math section to it. I do not consider myself a good test taker. For standardized tests, I feel like all one needs to do is to study sample questions over and over. I used to be so nervous before I take the test and I get tired at the end, so I came up with an idea to buy energy drink beforehand and drink while break.

Brain Storming For Essay2

In the essay, What’s in a major, Erika starts off by referring to the article by columnist Michelle Singletary. Erika also uses quotation, “You should be going to college to have your mind blown by new ideas”, to strengthen her point and this is a perfect example pf quote sandwich, because it includes introduction of the quote prior to the quote and analysis after. At the end of the essay, Erika has a proper work cited page.

My family has four members in it: my father, my mother, my sister and myself. My family has been living in Japan, and I am the first person to be living outside country. I am older than my sister, so whenever my parents are away, it is my responsibility to keep the house safe. We do not have any beliefs in religion, so there are no special holidays we cerebrate, but we like to cerebrate Christmas  and New Years. New years for us is same time as new years in the States. One of the rituals my family has is to never say never. My father came up with this ritual randomly, and claimed “never say never because anything is possible if you believe in it.”

American Idioms

The first idiom that caught my attention on the website is “wet blanket”. Calling someone wet blanket means that  the person spoils other people’s fun. The slang can be used in a simple sentences like “He is such a wet blanket”, so it is easy to use in daily life, especially in college, where people meet all kinds of different people. The second term I liked is “eating someone”, this one means to bother someone. I thought this could be used often, because everyone gets bothered by someone, and saying “who’s eating you?” would be funny. The next idiom is a term that I actually have known, which is “call it a day”, this slang means to stop whatever one is doing. I have been using this idiom and it is pretty useful. One of the idioms I found odd is “going under the knife”, because it means to get medical operation. I thought it is kind of weird, because going under the knife sounds like someone is about to get injured or killed, but it really means to help someone survive. The last one I chose is “walking encyclopedia. This term could easily used in the United States. One of the things I noticed living in the States is people here has so much more knowledge whether if it is relevant or irrelevant.

Audio Essay Pitch

I am basically going to be talking about my high school decision in my audio essay. The story starts off back when I was in middle school. The first year in middle school, I was really in good shape. My academic record was above my parents’ expectation, and my advisor was telling me I would be able to attend one of the best high schools in Tokyo. I was also somewhat popular among the people in school. I thought I was cool, but I started to hang out with my new friends in school to keep up my reputation, and I began to slack off gradually. The second year in middle school, my academic record showed that I placed 60th out of 125 people in my grade in final exam. My parents hired a tutor for me to at least spend some time studying, but at the time I was not conscious of how these grades matter when deciding which high school to attend to, so I was putting the very minimum effort to satisfy my parents’ desire. By the time everyone start to think about their decision of high school, my academic record was nothing compared to one from first year. My GPA was 3 (equivalent to 2.5 gpa in the U.S), and I was hanging out with my friends everyday until the sun goes down. I kept on having meeting with my advisor and my parents , and my advisor told us that I would not be able to get into the school I wanted to go to. This is when I realized how much of a mess I was. When thinking about my potential new school, my parents thought it was their fault I was slacking off, because they took it too easy on me, so they were like we have to send him to a boarding school, and the first idea that came up is an all boys boarding school in Chiba.” (about two hours away from my house) I immediately said no to this idea, because I was not going to spend my precious high school life in all boys school. Then my parents gave me another option, which is to study abroad in the U.S.

One of the potential topics for essay one is the story about the time when I decided to study abroad. The story takes us back to when I was in middle school. When thinking about my potential new school, my parents thought it was their fault I was slacking off, because they took it too easy on me, so they were like “oh let’s put him in an all boys boarding school in Chiba.” (about two hours away from my house) My reaction to this suggestion was “Hell nooo. I am not going to all boys school.” Then my parents asked me if I wanna study abroad in the U.S, I was like oh that actually sounds good. At the time I was all about catching attention, so this suggestion really fitted my aspiration. Therefore, I decided to study abroad, but my parents did not let me pick where I want to go, so basically they sent me to Maine, where nothing fun exists. Now that I think about that time, I am pretty proud of myself having guts to go in the new environment. I should have been scared, but I was brave and outgoing.
