I didn’t attend the speeches at Rhetoric Week but got a sense of what happened through our discussion in class today. Students shared what they thought of the speeches, talked about their visual evidence, and debated who had the best speech. One of the speakers didn’t do enough research, Adrienne claimed. And there had been some disagreements on who had the best speech. Particularly, how it had been articulated. Some classmates critiqued one of the speakers’ flow and posture, specifically, how she had been walking back and forth on stage without purpose. On the other hand, Dom complimented the organization and structure of her speech, as she seemed well prepared. I can see where both of them are coming from since it’s possible to be too prepared, in that you can just memorize your speech and recite it, which can be boring. However, based on what I know thus far, I would say I agree with Dom, I’d rather listen to a speech that is well executed over a mediocre speech that is more conversational. But, this is all subjective; it’s obvious that there will be disagreements about which speech was the best.
