After doing research I found an article that is relevant to my topic for essay 4. White-collar work and blue-collar work is reshaping the way we think about their specific skills. According to the article “Managing White-Collar Work: An Operations-Oriented Survey,” by Hopp in 2009, he defines white-collar work as “salaried office workers” or “non-manual laborers”(Hopp, 2009, p. 2). They characterize white collar work as the “management” type and blue-collar work as “machining”(Hopp, 2009, p. 2). “White-collar tasks involve significant use of knowledge in generating ideas, process, and solutions, while blue-collar tasks consist primarily of physical transformation”(Hopp, 2009, p. 2). This article characterizes the stereotypes given to being a white-collar worker and a blue-collar worker.

I will write about the stereotypes between the white-collar work and manual work. First talking about the definition of each then comparing the stereotypes. The providing counterexamples by giving facts and stats about people who work in these types of works. Talk about the social scripts about each type of work and where it came from. The different attitudes and discuss if they are accurate. Provide images of what white-collar work and manual work is characterized as. Then talk about the relationship between work and social class by pulling information from the readings. Also, talk about the relationship between work and education. Use examples from “The Case for Working with Your Hands” by Crawford and some of my personal experience. For example, talking about how high schools are taking away the shop classes and added more college readiness classes. Provide facts about how this affects students. talk about the skills you learn for trade work. compare the skills of trade school and college. Give facts about the statistics of people with their masters and what job they have compared to trade work people? what are the educational scripts: Parents and teachers telling students that the only way to prove your academic credentials is to go to college and get a degree? Then talk about how these educational scripts can be rewritten: bring back shop classes, have students try out trade internships, provide trade school options to students? Talk about how each type of work is important

After reflecting on my family’s experiences of work, I understand that there is a relationship between work and intelligence or social class. For example, my parent works at a store that sells fresh produces. At the storefront you see the fresh fruits and vegetables laid out, but how they got there was through many workers going out to the field to pick the foods. This is a demanding job because the store delivers to consumers and so certain food items must be correctly placed in certain boxes. There may be some issues such as working out in the sun picking foods, but from what I notice, the workers are treated equally. Most of the workers there are older and some come from families with low-income, but it doesn’t affect how they are treated. They are treated equally because their work environment is near the storefront. So the public is able to see them work and the customers are encouraged to come out to the field to help pick the fruits and vegetables. Because the customers see the work environment, the business provides the workers with a decent work condition.
After doing research on issues of eviction and homelessness in my hometown, I found little information on the town I live in. Instead, I did research on the city as a whole. Hawaii is among the states with the highest rates of homelessness. More than 50 out of every 10,000 Hawaii residents are homeless. The growing number of homelessness is causing officials to evict them off sidewalks and streets, which is a problem because they move and group to other places around the city. Hawaii has also a high percentage of people that rent their homes. This is a problem because Hawaii’s rent is increasing and it is the 11-highest among cities across the nation. The median rent for a one-bedroom in Honolulu is now $1,750. That’s up about 2.9 percent since 2015. The research I found is similar to the ideas in “Home and Hope” because the people who live in neighborhoods who spend more of their income on rent had higher eviction rates than those who don’t.

In relation to Walter Payton College Prep in Chicago, my school, Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego is pretty similar. At my high school, an all-girls, catholic, college preparatory, we had many seminars empowering women and had many speakers come in to speak about their success. We had trips that could be taken during the summer to explore different countries. Mainly my school was big on arts, however, towards the end they started integrating more programs for STEM. There were a good amount of clubs to join and sports programs after school. The average class size was 25 and the overall student body consisted of 800 students. Many of the students in my graduating class were accepted into ivy leagues, UC schools, and one student was accepted into Stanford.

The Harvard Westlake School is similar to my highschool (Academy of Our Lady of Peace) in that it was very exclusive and it focused on academic competitiveness. Our school’s focus was to empower women in STEM and the arts. It has a lot of prestige in that it is known as a tough academic school, with its students being involved in society in terms of social justice. Our classrooms were max 25 students, and AP courses were encouraged to increase competitiveness.

I would consider my high school to be successful but according to statistics, my school would be the opposite of BASIS Scottsdale. According to state test scores, 22% of the students are at least proficient in math and 37% in reading(NICHE). However, our students are very involved in athletics and within the communities. Molokai High School is full of diverse students with families that are in low-income. BASIS Scotsdale do not have students with free/ reduced lunch, but at my high school over 60% of the students are on free/reduced lunch.
A controversial topic that I researched about is the issue of genetically modified foods or GMO foods. According to Wikipedia, they state GMO foods as “foods produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering.” This article provided disputes over the use of foods derived from GMO crops instead of conventional crops, and other uses of genetic engineering in food production. Specific topics that Wikipedia discusses include the mixing of genetically modified and non-genetically modified products in the food supply, effects of GMOs on the environment, the rigor of the regulatory process, and consolidation of control of the food supply in companies that make and sell GMOs. The controversial issue that was brought up included the health risks that genetically engineered foods have on humans and the environment. This article does not change the way I evaluate its contents because I understand that the public has access to these documents and can change the language to fit their opinions and bias. However, they do provide the cited references and include their sources on the bottom, so I am able to check if the information is reliable.
After researching about university rankings and their relationship with quality education, I came across an article that discussed the role university rankings have played in our society. This article describes university rankings as an example of the social construction of reality and institutionalism(Fowles 2016). Which according to the article, includes the way the institutions interact with and affect society. I learned that the growing popularity of university rankings hide the important issues like affordability.
