Class 3

So what I remember of class 3 is that we went to the golden gate park for the first time and gave our project 1 presentations. We first visited the conservatory of flowers and then the academy of science/ de young museum, which is where I gave my project 1 presentation. I think its pretty cool how San Francisco has all these little hidden areas and its great to go back around that are since I haven’t been over there since I was like n elementary school.

class 2

So similar to the last post I’m going off my memory, so in the second class I remember we started getting into credibility. We began the sort of introduction to project 1 by going to the panhandle and separating into groups and watching several videos by several different public speakers. We  then analyzed how they are as public speakers using the sheet of paper that professor hunt gave to us. I think using other speakers as a sort of guide to understanding public speaking is important because when it comes to a subject such as speaking I think it is better to see how other people are able to effectively do it compared to just a professor  telling us how to do it.

Class 1

So I’m going off straight memory here, but what I remember is that when I first arrived to class I was really surprised  by the class size. I remember reading a description of a FYS and it being really small classes but I didn’t think like, 15 people small. I think small classes are some what important to have in a class such as a First Year Seminar because they really ease you into the whole college scene. Compared to if the classes were really large it’ll feel as though i’m just being thrown in. I think overall, the first day was a success and the description of the class really peeked my interest.

Peer Analysis Thing-Project 3

I think everyone did a pretty GOOD job. What I think everyone did well was really explain their ideas or thoughts thoroughly also, everyones powerpoint(except mine) was really nice and visually pleasing. Especially the ones with a lot of pictures. I think what everyone can do overall to improve is memorize what were going to say or not rely on a piece of paper or whatever.

Self Asesement for Project 3

I think overall, I did alright. I don’t think I did as well as the last presentation but, I definitely did better than the first presentation. I think what I did well was explaining  my thoughts and the video throughly but, what I think fell short was my slides. I don’t think y slides were very effective in providing a visual for my ideas about the video that I watched. I also, didn’t talk about bikes in any way so…..yeah.

Sources for project 3 :))

The video that I watched and basically drove my entire presentation was a video of a Stanford professor speaking about public speaking in biology. She talked about how scientist are really bad at giving presentations and I think what she says next is really interesting because scientist are so bad at presenting its too the point where relatively decent presentations will open the door for a lot of people. She also spoke about how scientist do not know how to present their data in a very concise and easily applicable way. Overall, the video was really interesting and entertaining to watch.

Outline 3 Make up work

The overall message that I’m tryin got convey in y presentation is importance of giving good presentations in science and how giving good presentations can lead to opportunity. My presentation will start with a description of my idea with the title page then following that up with an explanation of the video I watched and what she thinks of public speaking in biology. I will then lead into my interview of the biology student and close out the presentation.

Project 3 Write Out thing

Intro

I’m going to be talking about communication among scientist but, more specifically how scientist give presentations and why they aren’t effective as communicators.

First slide

So I watched a video that professor hunt sent me of this lady susan mcconnell kind of talking about why scientist suck at giving presentations. So basically she said that scientist do not:

Prepare for presentations.

Ex. professor hunt making do the outline and video things

If they do review their data they are often times become discouraged because they notice flaws I guess in their experiments or holes in their data.

And they don’t make their data conscie when their trying to present it to the audience.

Ex. It’s not easily understood by the vast majority.

She also spoke about how if you are able to give a nice presentation it at often times opens doors for you. So people basically really notice that you do know how to speak and you’re confident in your work and the chances of you getting invited to future events is increased I guess.

Second Slide

The girl that I interviewed did not want her name or picture shown but, shes a second year bio/ chem major and I basically asked her the importance of effective communication in biology and how so biologist communicate. And basically she talked about how if the professor does not effectively express the ideas then it influences the students in a negative way and affects the next generation of scientist.

Conclusion

So to conclude  the presentation something I learned from sort of doing research on this is that coming up with results is important but presenting those results in an effective way is just as equally important.

Write Out-Project 2

-I am going to speaking about the the importance of word choice when presenting data or evidence.

-I got this idea from reading this article that professor hunt sent to us a couple weeks ago about how this dude from uber uses specific words to describe the benefits of uber in  a very urban city such as san francisco He used words such as hope, change and kennedy to create this sort of positive vibe for uber within cities.

-So putting this idea in context of this class, if I wanted to argue that the panhandle is a good place to go on a date right, when I present the activities being done in the panhandle I could repeat the word couple or if I wanted to argue that the panhandle is good for kids I could repeat the word parents or emphasis the word safety

-Awareness of this aspect of the presentation of evidence is important to recognize so you guys as the audience aren’t fooled by all the fancy nice words that the presenter may be using to influence your opinion.

Class 8 post-More Makeup :))

So during this class we went to the library and lone mountain to give our presentations. We also, went to the bike workshop place to learn a little more about building bikes and bike culture on campus. I think overall, everyone did a pretty good job on the presentations but, what i really found interesting during this class was when we went to the workshop place. I found it interesting how all the found bikes parts are all brought there and they are all available for free, if you want to build your own bike.
