Response of the event

I attended the event that held by Tika in Feb. 22. It was like an interview, three international students sitting there and talking about their experiences in the US and giving suggestion to new international students like us. I was impressed when they are talking. They are so confident to express themselves, and their answers to those questions were very helpful to me. All of them talked about how they feel struggling when they first came to the US, and I think I have the same feeling. Also, they said there are a lot of differences between their own countries and the US.

After all, I believed that I have learned a lot from this event. After this event, now I know how to face some of the challenges that I will meet in the future, and I have the confidence to beat those challenges.

In -Class Writing

I had felt “tokenized” of my physical appearance, when I was young I was short, and could be the shortest of people in the same age,  so every time someone meets me they will think this guy is short. And I love to play basketball, so when I tell people I like playing basketball, they will give a face, that face means that “you are so short, how are you going to play basketball?” I know that but I just can’t do anything because I was short. I hate that when I tell people I love basketball and they seems very surprised, when the first time they see me they believe I won’t be a person who can play basketball, this kind of conclusion is just not fair to me. As I grow up and I am not that short anymore I still feel those people’s attitudes were not fair to a person who likes basketball.

Audio essay pitch

The story that I choose for my audio essay will be about my experience in the summer of 2106, the song that I choose is “Unstoppable,” the singer of this song is Sia. The reason why I choose this song is in the summer of 2016, my favorite basketball team Golden States Warriors was in the NBA final games and at that time period, “Unstoppable” was one of the most popular song on the TV, so this song will be playing when the game was in time out. Warriors was so good and unstoppable at that time, and I believe that they can win the championship, however, they blow up a 3-1 lead and lost the finals. I was so frustrated and sad. After the last game, Warriors players said they won’t give up even they lost such a important game, and this inspired me, makes me believe that even I fail to do something if I keep working, I will success some day. The truth is Warriors won the championship of 2017.

For now I still love this song, and every time when I listen to this song I can still feel how sad I was when Warriors lost the championship, and besides this, I feel this song encouraged me to work harder, to be tough to face failure.

I will choose Aaron’s responses, his idea is the racial tension in America is different from any other country in this world, Garnette Cadogan’s essay “Black and Blue” shows that the truth of how black people’s life in America, there are still many problems about the unfair and disrespect that black people are facing.

For “Class Dismissed,” he said that it is equally important that there are more around social class rather than race, how everyone in America knows how to cater to a certain class and how diminishing it is for a person to know they’re being taken advantage of is a interesting part of this essay.

Meaning of Name assignment

I am from China, and my name is Yiang Leng, however, in Chinese, people put their family name first and then given name, so in China, my name is Leng Yiang. About my last name, Leng, it means “cold” in Chinese, and this is a special last name, in my memory I never meet someone has the same last name as mine. Leng is an old last name in China, and hundreds year ago Leng was not Leng, it was Lin, as the time goes by, it turned to Leng.

For my first name, Yiang, actually it is two words, Yi Ang, in Chinese, it means tough and never give up.

When I was young, my friends always make fun of my last name, they say: “Why your last name is cold not hot.” I just don’t know how to answer that question.
