In South of China: Chengdu

The dish’s name in direct translation is Sliced Lungs of Couple, but it does means to eat couple’s lungs. So, for better understanding what it is , people also translate the name into Sliced Beef and Ox Offal in Chili Sauce:

Background story: It is a famous dish in Sichuan Province. In the 1960s, a couple 郭朝华【Guo Zhaohua】 and 张佃敏【Zhang Dianmin】 who opened a stand at 长顺街【Changshun Street】 in Chengdu became famous for making tossed sliced beef and ox offal in sauce. Their beef slices looked bright in color and had a distinct taste from those of other vendors. Because of their delicious dish, prospering business, and harmonious husband and wife relationship, their slices were called Fuqi Feipian.

After I read Irving’s response and Maggie’s response, I can see that Irving has summarized all filmily situations appeared in this essay and it helps me to recall the content of the essay very well. Both of they two have experienced to be raised by their grandparents, so in the process of reading their response, I can see the common point between them. Also, as what I talked in my response, it is very usual in China.

After I reread my first essay and read all the comment for it, I found that I worked well on talking about the culture differences and telling my improvement on learning skills, and also I am very glad that my pics made great visuals.

However, there are also a lot of aspects that I can progress, which are that I could write done more examples for my changes and it would make my essay to be more specific and changing the order of the examples and ideas would also make the essay to be more clear.

In the other hand, I found that I had a lot of run-on sentences and punctuation problems. Thus, I might need to fix them later.

1️⃣.Free writing for second essay

I would love to choose the essay that we read on Feb 1st and Feb 3rd, which are:

(1.)Yzzy Gonzalez’s essay “Technology Taking Over?” (pp. 50-52)

(2.)Clive Thompson’s essay “The Parent Trap: How Teens Lost the Ability to Socialize” (pp.55-56)

During my essay, I would love to introduce both essays’  content at first:

The first essay is talking about how technology changes teenagers life now. As the author said, technology around us and change our life in every part. Our sleep can be estimated by the smart alarm, we can cook food easily, we can use Ebook, we can use phone to choose food delivery, we can do almost everything by technology.

Also, the second essay pointed out another side about technology that parents may think that technology limits teenagers face-to-face ability. But actually, the truth is not like this. The reason why parent think that children’s social abilities have been limited is that they don’t chase after technology as their kids and they are the real reason why children don’t have enough time to have social abilities.

After I talk all of these content and ideas, I’d love to point out my own view that technology can really help our life, and it’s becoming a new culture in different country. To use it to benefit daily life is such a great thing for human: we can save a plenty of time with using technology positively. Also, to use different APPs in different country can get different effect. In conclusion, I would love to talk 3 angles about: benefits of technology; management of technology; process with using technology.

2️⃣.General ideas and outline

Topic: technology is around human’s life and it changes human’s work, but we also need to learn to manage it and solve some problems with it.

Thesis:

1. technology changes human’s life a lot, no matter from the way to work or keep daily life or socialize with others (support: use the first essay as evidence and talk about daily life in China)

2.talk some argument about using technology: some people may be tech-addicted and people should learn to control it(support : some report about tech-addicted)

3.people who are not as latest as the technology would not agree with new lifestyle, but I claim that they should try to chase the development of human and then they can learn more and more (support:use the second essay as evidence to talk that parents haven’t correctly recognize the benefits of technology and they cannot figure out what’s their educational problem due to this )

March 1st: discussion

Yarly to Irving’s response.

After I reading Irving’s respond for discussion today, I found that he used some of my jokes as example. It does exists in our daily life, people from other provinces may say:” people from Yunnan are so barbarous and they all trade drugs with Myanmar.” Thus, we would always use these folks as jokes. But after I reading his article, I found that he is complaining and not thinking it’s funny, so I would not joke that way anymore and I don’t want him to joke that way either. Moreover, I have never been to Xi’an and I have also heard about the fake scenery-spot news. I hope that Irving didn’t go to fake ones. In addition, I am wondering how food there is?

Thinking critically after reading:

Question: Do you agree that universities have the same obligation to uphold diverse voices that you might expect of our government? Why or why not?

Answer:

I agree that universities have the same obligation to uphold diverse voices that you might expect of our government.

First of all, I claim that we should talk about the role and the obligation of universities. Michael Bloomberg have expressed his view about this from Commencement Speech at Harvard University in 2014 “The role of universities is not to promote an ideology. It is to provide scholars and students with a neutral forum for researching and debating issues—without tipping the scales in one direction, or repressing unpopular views.”(33rd paragraph). I cannot agree the idea more, In university, the scholars are not teaching students ways to solve problems, but to provide a environment that can help them develop themselves from debating. It is not about helping them what to do, but about how to figure out all their confusions.

Also, for the obligation of the government, it absolutely needs various voices. For example, when members from different parties are debating, they would try to convince the opposite and also they would improve themselves from it. Listening from the other side can be really beneficial and progressive.

Therefore, I think the obligations of universities and government are in common and I agree with the state that universities have the same obligation to uphold diverse voices that you might expect of our government.
