This meme was found on Google and it comments on how black people’s arguments about racism and violence are often undermined by white people trying to turn the tables back on to black people. It uses humor to undermine the seriousness of the issue and how it affects the stereotypes and society’ s perception of the issue as black people are countered with this argument to undermine their experiences with racism. It also successfully shifts the focus of the argument from the main issue of racism to black on black crime hence manipulating the narrative of racism. This meme is effectively thought provoking and it uses a popular argument presented to black people to address how invalidating that statement is. The meme itself is fairly simplistic so that may affect its strength as an argument, but still, the argument is clear.

April 6th- Plagiarism Activity

Is this plagiarism or not?

Excerpt from page 23 of an article in 2011 by William Ellis entitled “Culture in Transition.”

World problems such as poverty, pollution, war, and hunger are inherent in the

current system of world order based on nation-states and economic competition.

They can be solved if people know and understand one another on a global,

grass-roots basis.  By developing people-to-people linkages irrespective of national

borders, we can start to ameliorate global tensions and inequalities.

Is this plagiarism or not?  Y or N

__Y___William Ellis asserts that world problems such as poverty, pollution, war, and hunger are

inherent in the current system of world order based on nation-states and economic competition (p. 23).

All the words aare the same of the original one.

__Y___Global tensions and inequalities can be solved if people begin to help one another

on a grass-roots basis, moving beyond the current world order of economic competition

(Ellis 23). Incorrect citation

___N__Ellis (2011) argues that global problems are often a result of exploitation inherent in

economic competition.  He contends that “grass roots….people-to people linkages  irrespective

of national borders” can do much to ease global tensions (p. 23).

__Y___Economic competition is at the basis of many of the world’s problems (Ellis 23). Only by

seeing ourselves as a single family without the separation of national boundaries can world

tensions begin to be eased.  The year and page number are missing.

_Y___Ellis (2011) argues that world problems are caused by overpopulation and that the only

possible solution is an enforced tax on families who have more than one child (p. 23).

It’s plagiarism because these information are not in the original source.

April5-peer response/anti-racist teacher response

I read Isabella’s response. She talks about how the girls prospered through the help of these sessions, something I mentioned in my paragraph as well. She gives credit to Carmen Knyard for creating a space forum where the girls could be their own authentic self. She also includes a personal experience which resonated to the writing. I used a personal experience as well. There is no written evidence provided from the essay, something I did not include myself, and I should have.

In the anti-racist teacher video, the high school teacher from Seattle, Taryn Coe, tries to create a safe space for her students in her classroom where her students felt valued, as she believes that their ideas are just as important as hers. This helps me understand better what Knyard was trying to don with her groups. She also talks about how white kids in majority white schools and neighborhoods and little to no contact with people of color, which can lead to them having a complete misunderstanding of systemic racism.

She includes a good point that when teachers and people try to make people of color the focus of their attention in discussions as to what the world is doing wrong, it often leads to more harm than good. She states that white people should educate themselves to how white people benefit from systemic racism.

The video makes the argument that people should be kind to each other. Pathos is dominant in this video because it appeals to emotion and that is also shown in the visuals. The video started with the main character being reluctant to be kind to strangers. He grew more open to being kind to others and that change created a change in his life. He is shown to have a more positive attitude towards everything after helping the old lady cross the road. There is also a cycle of life in the video. The old lady helped him feel better by helping someone, and the character is seen doing the same at the end of the video, acting like a blind person so another man can experience the joy of helping others the same way he did. A visual change also occurs after the man has a change in his character, everywhere he goes seems to be brighter, and more colorful than the first half of the video, which asserts his happiness and change of heart. The main character is also seen wearing colorful clothes, instead of the black ones he always wears.

A wise old gentleman retired and bought a home near a middle school. He mainly spent his summers in his cottage. Then the school year began, and his peace and quiet came to a sudden halt.

On the first day of school three boys came down. The alley beating merrily on every trash can they see, and the same thing happens the next day and the next, and the noise started driving the wise old man crazy. Time for action.

On the first day of school, three boys came down the alley. They merrily beat on every trash can they saw and the same thing happened the following days. The noise started driving the wise old man crazy and he decided it was time for action.

The next afternoon, he stopped the drummers as they banged their way down the street. He said, “You kids are a lot of fun! I love hearing your drumming because it is so cheerful and it reminds me of what I used to do at your age. Will you do me a favor?”

The boys looked at him suspiciously. “What?” they asked, “I’ll give you a dollar if you promise to come around every single day and keep beating on those trash cans,” said the man.

The boys were thrilled. Everyday they pounded on trash cans and collected a dollar.

After about a week, the wise old man stopped the boys again and this time he looked a little bit sad. I still love your drumming,” he said to the boys, “however, I’m afraid

spending a dollar a day is hard on me because I’m on a fixed income. From now on, I’m only going to be able to pay you 50 cents to beat on the cans.

The boys weren’t too happy, but they decided to accept 50 cents a day, and they continued beating on all the trash cans. After another week, the clever old man stopped the boys again. “I’ve got more bad news,” he said. “My Social Security check hasn’t come yet, so I’m not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents a day. Is that all right?

“Are you kidding?” said one of the boys. “We’re not going to waste our time beating on those trash cans only for a lousy quarter! We quit!

The wise old man smiled, enjoying his peace and quiet.

A minister walking down a country lane sees a young farmer struggling to load hay back onto a cart. The minister says to him, “You look hot, my son, rest a moment and let me give you a hand.”

“No thanks,” says the young man. “My father wouldn’t like it.”

“I’m sure he wouldn’t mind,” the minister said. “Everyone is entitled to a break. Come and have a drink of water.” Again, the young man said that his father would be upset.

Losing his patience, the minister said, “Your father must be a real slave driver. I’d like to give him a piece of my mind! Tell me, where can I find him?

“Well,” replied the young farmer, “look down. He’s under a load of hay.”

Is this plagiarism or not?

No, this is common knowledge. 1. Kyoko needs to write a report on American politics.

She looks up Barack Obama on Wikipedia and discovers he is the 44th president of the United States.

She includes this information in her report but doesn’t mention Wikipedia.

____Y_2. Tam is writing a paper on a novel for his English class.  Since the whole class is reading

the same book, he doesn’t need to use a citation.

___Y__3. Sugi wrote a paper for his European history class last semester and got an A on the

paper. This semester, his Political Science class is addressing some of the same issues that are in

his History paper.  He checks with his professor first who agrees with Sugi, so he uses the

material from his History paper.

Answer: He still does need to cite the paper, even though He is copying from his own

March 8th-Free writing

Brainstorming through ideas for the analysis, a topic that is on the radar of every reader is the war in Ukraine. All the articles have different agendas, naturally so is everyone’a politics. Some use facts while some use pathos to make people feel for the people of Ukraine, so there is a lot of articles to be analyzed on that topic. Some topics do with, and the logos is undercut by contradictory emotional argument.

Another is climate, for years people have had different opinions about it, and while some companies use logos to tell the reader about the irreversible change happening on the planet, some have different agendas and write claiming it to be a hoax.

Outline-

With the Russian invasion- articles write about whether the US made a appropriate response to the Russians.

-Give a brief summary of the editorial

  • Analyze the arguments made by the author
  • See how his/her structure is similar of different to the topics talked about in the 6th chapter.
  • See if two different appeals are used, if so, do they help each others points or undercut one another.

Feb 24- Reading response

I read Edwin’s response to the article. He does a good job summarizing what the author’s main points are and how she uses ethos, logos, and pathos to get that message across to the audience. The author uses ethos to say that standardized testing does not accurately portray ones intelligence. She also uses pathos while explaining her mother’s story and sharing how she has a tumor. Amy Tan uses all three of these devices vividly to help get her message across.

Passage 1:

A man from the city came to visit a small farm, and he saw a farmer feeding pigs in a very strange way. First, the farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby apple tree, and the pig would eat the apples directly off the tree. Then, the farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was full; then, he would start again with another pig.

The man from the city was pretty puzzled. He watched for quite a while and finally said, “What a strange way to feed pigs! It’s a waste of time! You could save a whole lot of time if you just shook the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!” The farmer looked puzzled and replied, “What’s time to a pig?”

Passage 2:

A young man waiting in line at the bank developed a loud case of hiccups that got worse and worse. By the time he got to the teller’s window, he could hardly talk when handing the teller his check to cash.

The teller tapped numbers into the computer, in a moment looking up, and frowned; “I can’t cash your check,” she said.

The man was shocked. “Why not?” he asked.

“The computer indicates you do not have sufficient funds to cover this amount,” she said. “In fact, our records show that your account is overdrawn by more than $5000.00.”

“It can’t be!” cried the man. “You’ve got to be kidding!”

“You’re right. I am,” she smiled. She started counting out his cash. “You will notice that your hiccups are gone, though!”
