Michelle Obama use an appropriate volume to the space and audience. She varies her tone, for instance she talks slower when she wants to emphasize her point, she uses metaphors so the audience can have a better understanding of the message she is trying to deliver… She make eye contact with audience members and she uses gestures and body movements that flow naturally and expressively.

I love everything about her speech because it doesn’t seem forced or too formal, but she still make up her argument affectively. I’ll definitely try to be that confident and relaxed for my own speech. I will just add images, statistics, maybe a short testimony. Because visual is important.

Alisha, Aditya & Zhiheng

Aditya and I both deeply understand and relate to the author, Aditya gave a more in depth analysis of the arguments used when I mostly focused on the way the author relates his experience, by using dialogues for instance.

Zhiheng focused on how the teacher shouldn’t have humiliated him by saying, almost with joy, that he didn’t have a father. It is obvious that this moment affected him until his adulthood.

The death of Patrice Lubumba is a significant historical event that has shaped the future of my country. The first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was murdered in Elisabethville ( now known as Lubumbashi ), in the province of Katanga, in January 1961.

Lumumba was adored by the people because he fought for independence ( that occurred the 30 June 1960 ) and for the rights of the whole nation. He was hated and considered as a threat by the Western nor only of his ideals, but also for his incredible charisma and his power of persuasion within the Congolese people. He refused to live in a new democracy where the Congo would still be controlled by the Belgians colonizers.

Therefore, a plot was orchestrated by the Congolese dirigeants ( Mobutu, Kasa-Vubu, Tshombe ) helped by the Belgian and American authorities ( CIA ), to put Lumumba out of state of causing trouble. His murder involved a mondial revolution, multiple countries protested, and he eventually was recognized as a National Hero ( after his death ) by the Congolese State.

Nowadays, the country still mourn the murder of Lumumba because most of the population and the new dirigeants believe that he could have been the man who would have made the Congo take off economically and politically. He could have made his people proud to be Congolese. He could have made the country an African reference. Admired by ones, saluted by the others.

I read Hang’s response for today, what’s funny is that Hang’s response is like brief sum up of my response. We both talk about the same things: You have to know what your audience want to hear and what you are going to talk about. You have to interact with your audience in order to make them think and act, do the required reading before and make sure they know their subjects thoroughly and that it’s important to know your audience and know you want to influence them in what way. I just gave a lot more details than Hang and I made longer phrases as well.

I found some similarities within my writing and Ori’s one because we both brought up the facts that phatos as used by Juliana, help to build strong introduction and conclusions as well as connection the public to the author. He used example of images for Juliana, and we both use Martin Luther King’s speech as an example for his use of Repetition, Parallelism, and Climactic Order.

Feng and I talked about exactly the same points; the use of the grandmother ” broken English ” that both intrigued us and the fact that she uses words such as ” black community ” or ” black town ” is not really appropriate but since she is first a chinese speaker. I added that her granddaughters were always correcting her when she was making this kind of mistakes and that her granddaughters as well as her daughter and her daughter’s husband were all very ” Americanized “, had forgotten about the Chinese values and traditions and were just all busy making always more money or lost in new technologies and food for the youngers.

Runze and I found a lot of similarities in regards of our works. We both focused on how Visual Rhetoric builds strong arguments based on images or videos. Runze gave examples about how when you see a poster with a slogan, you actually remember it easier and the arguent soak in into your mind faster. I personally gave examples of how you can create visual arguments nowadays throughout beginners’s videos. We both emphasized the fact that images grab and hold our attention, stir our emotions and tease our imagination.

09/30: Essay 2 free Writing

I don’t know yet on which subject I want to do my rhetorical analysis. I was thinking about doing it based on an article of the New York Times, but then I remembered the article we had to read last friday; Amy’s Mother Tongue and I figured out that I can do a rhetorical analysis based on a more ” familiar ” article or text than what I usually read in the newspapers. For instance, Amy’s Mother Tongue is an argumentation based on a true story. It was easier to read than what I usually read on the news and more interesting. I want to do my rhetorical analysis based on a text like that. However, I don’t know if the Professor will agree because the text didn’t seem very  ” formal ” to me. it was pretty sentimental. I guess I’ll have to ask him. But thinking about it while writing, Amy’s Mother Tongue was actually a great text. I’ll ask to do my rhetorical analysis based on that specific text. And finger-crossed he will agree.

Outline:

If Professor Lamsal vet Amy’s Mother Tongue, here would be the scheme:

Introduction: A summary of the text as well as informations about the author.

Body: The big part of the essay. Provide a critical analysis of the argumentation based especially on the sample essay I read in Everything is an argument.

Conclusion: Include a takeaway message and review the overall of the argumentation.
