February 1: Reading Response Discussion

The key idea in Letizia’s response is her interest in pathos, or the way a writer can use emotion to persuade their audience. This idea is similar to my writing because I too am most intrigued by arguments made using some kind of emotional appeal. I learned from her writing that Kairos is referred to as the god of opportunity. I am sure I read that but her writing cemented that reference in my head. I do believe that Letizia’s response follows the guidelines set for reading responses.

January 27: Ubiquitous Arguments (with Briana Do & Melissa Zilinki)

Yes, an argument can be any text that expresses a point of view. The following items can make certain arguments about the items themselves and/or the people in possession of them:

  • Someone wearing a Golden State Warriors cap expresses their interest and preference for the team. Outgoing fans wearing the Golden State Warriors’ attire may even argue that they’re one of, or the best team in the NBA.
  • Someone wearing a pair of Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34’s can indicate that they are athletic, or a fan of the Nike brand. It also argues that the wearer may have an interest in investing in a “quality” shoe.
  • The explicit content warning on a rap CD can argue that it is intended for mature audiences, especially according to the distributor.  It can also argue that there is content in the CD that will not be acceptable to some.
  • The health warnings on a cigarette packet argue that cigarettes are not good for you and that that is necessary to advertise to the consumer. Ironically enough, companies in the tobacco industry, like Marlboro, make billions of dollars in profit every year, despite the notorious risks associated with their product.
  • The popularity of the Tesla Model 3, especially in the Silicon Valley, argues for the support of alternative energy sources; specifically through the electric car industry.  It can also be seen as a status symbol due to the high price and luxury branding.
  • A pair of Ray Bans may argue that your eyes need to be protected from the sun. It may also argue that style and more “luxurious” options should be taken into account when choosing protective accessories.

Introduction

Hi! My name is Anna Chinaza Hughes. I prefer Chinaza or Naz and my pronouns are she/her. This is my first semester and I’m majoring in General Psychology. I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prince is from Minneapolis (something every Minnesotan probably says) and the winters are very tough. I’m the youngest of 4 and I have 2 brothers and 1 sister. I’ve been writing songs as a hobby/passion since I was 12.

The majority of the writing that I have done has been academic, such as writing essays and papers. I have also written many songs starting at the age of 12. The quality of the songs I’ve written has progressed as I’ve aged. I’ve also dabbled in poetry and story writing. I’ve always been a writer and lover of vocabulary. I think it runs in my family to write, as well as creating art in general.

I enjoy creative writing the most. I have a harder time with academic writing because I struggle with proper formatting and organization. I hope this courses allows my confidence in my academic writing to grow. I want to establish a better understanding of the foundation and formatting of writing a paper. Similar to that I hope to work on my organization skills, as I struggle when deciding where to include what information.  I hope my passion for writing contributes to the environment of this class because that is what makes writing fun for me.
