人的一生中會遇到兩個人,一個驚艷了時光,一個溫柔了歲月。

There are two people to meet in one’s life. One astonishes the day, and the other tenders the year.

This is the classic sentence from a Chinese novel indicating that there are two memorable relationships in once life. One is very first love that you spent the craziest time together and the other is the one you married with that you spend your life to accompany with. When translating the sentence, I try to maintain both the meaning and feeling of the sentence. The steps I think that could be taken to minimize the risk of miscommunication in a local context is

  • understand the indication (actual meaning) of the sentence
  •  translate the meaning first and then consider the feeling

What would you like about this process, what challenges you faced when interviewing, and what you would do to improve the next?

The things I like the most during the process is to hear the cultural story from my interviewee and know more about the other culture. My interviewee is from India and the artifacts we talked about is her diamond earrings. This is Hindi’s traditional culture and family tradition to let the girl get pierce when they are young. They believe it’s bad to leave the ears open. The challenges I faced is that there are two things I want to talk about- her earrings and her Indel laptop.  In the limited time, we have to figure out the topic that is more interesting and the interviewer is more willing to share the story.
