It was January 17, 2005, and three cadets were training to become police detectives. The sergeant decided to test they were skilled at recognizing a suspect. He showed the first cadet a picture for five seconds and then hid it. Then he said, “That was your suspect, how would you recognize him?”
“That’s easy”, answered the cadet. “We will find him fast because he only has one eye.”
The sergeant thought a minute and then answered, “Well that’s because the picture I showed you is a profile. It shows only a side view.” He couldn’t believed the cadet had given him such a ridiculous answer, but he went on to the second cadet. Flashed the picture for five seconds to him. Again, he asked, “That was your suspect, how would you recognize him?”
The second cadet smiled and said, “It would be easy to catch, because he had only one ear!”
The police sergeant shook his head in disbelief. Then angrily responded, “What’s the matter with you two? Of course, only one eye and one ear are showing, it’s a picture of his profile! Was that the best answer you can come up with?!” Extremely frustrated at this point, he showed the picture to the 3rd cadet and in a very testy voice asked, “This is your suspect. How would you recognize him?” He quickly added, “Think hard before giving me a stupid answer.” The cadet looked at the picture intently for a moment. Then she said, “The suspect wears contact lenses.” The sergeant is speechless. He goes to his office checked the suspects file in his computer and comes back. He is beaming. “Its true! The suspect does indeed wear contact lenses. Tell us how you were able to make such an astute observation! “It was easy,” said the cadet. “He can’t wear glasses because he only has one eye and one ear.”

Nov 15th historical event

The most significant historical event in Taiwan is that the Japanese colonial period during 1895 to 1945. It bring both negative and positive influence to my home country. The Japan government did a nice work for the development of Taiwan’s economy. For example the traffic construction. Due to that period, it improves the railway of Taiwan. Many railways still in use today have been repaired during the Japanese occupation. It also help the development of Taiwan’s education. For example, it created the predecessor of Taiwan University. The negative impact of Japanese colonial period is that they killed countless innocent Taiwanese, and they force women to be comfort women for the Japanese solider.  Also, they took away a lot of natural resources from Taiwan which caused an unrecoverable damage of the environment in Taiwan.

I like the instagram star because she is very pretty. She always introduces the Korean make up product, and she has her own brand. The photo she posts online were attractive with a  delicate makeup on her. She also had a Youtube channel to teach people who wanted to as pretty as her. She once teach people how to do Tylor Swift’ make up and she did a wonderful job on it. It is hard for an Asian to look like an American due to the difference of genes, but she taught me that everything is possible if you give it a try. I think she use logos and ethos appealing very well.

After reading the feedback of Essay 2, I realized I should focus more on the rhetorical strategy. I must analysis more on how the author use ethos, pathos and logos appealing to convince people to his point.

It claims that we need Google to search the information around the world. With that, we can share our own thought about those information we had read on Google. Google already provided the background information for us, and we can make our own opinions about those news or events. It basically claims people how much we depend on Google. In the video, they use a lot of powerful pictures and short video to support their claim . They showed the example of what people had search in 2017. It makes people feel like involved. They use pathos appealing during the video a lot, such as the picture of refugee and the natural disaster.

By reading my classmate, Mandy’s response, there are some similar points between my response and hers. the first point we had in common is that we both mention about that the work is not only required us to use text and visual to tell a essay, but also, we need to including sounds and images to express our idea. Second point is that we both agree with that it is important to make sure that the audiences can receive the information we tried to provide when we put all the different sounds, images and text in the video. We should always check wether the video is easy for the audiences to follow or not.
