Student Shout-Out: COMS Majors at WSCA Undergraduate Research Conference

Today’s “Student Shout-Out” goes to nine of our Communication Studies majors who presented at the Western States Communication Association Undergraduate Scholars Conference in San Diego last weekend. That’s right… NINE of our majors! We had the more students presenting than any other university. By far. But who’s counting? (Me. I am counting.). Here are all of the details…

The Western States Communication Association Undergraduate Scholars Research Conference is a conference held annually during the Western States Communication Association Conference where undergraduate students present their original research. The papers are competitively chosen, so it is very impressive that our department had so many students present papers. The conference included students from the University of San Diego, UNLV, California State University, Long Beach, Western Washington University, Colorado State University, University of Utah, and more.

Here are our majors who presented at the conference:

Siana Amos “The Best of Both Worlds: Relational Communication in Friends with Benefits Relationships”

Marcelle Mulier “Until Death Do Us Part: An Examination of Death Communication Through a Western Lens”

Megan Busch “The Complex Relationship Between College-Aged Youngest Siblings and Their Older Siblings”

Kelsey Duff “‘Because She Is a Woman, I’d Rather Talk to My Stepmom’: Examining Gender and Its Influence on Stepchild Relations with Stepparents”

Paula Diaz “Bilingual Siblings: How Communication is Affected”

Ajouah Grass “Strategies for Success: Navigating Alzheimer’s and Dementia Communication”

Amanda Sand “‘Consistently Inconsistent’: An Analysis of Communication Between Addicts and Their Loved Ones”

Gabrielle Domingo “Sexual Harassment: The Evolution of Communication After a Woman Has Been Sexually Harassed”

Carlyn Abramo “Grrrls Just Wanna Be Punk”

A special shout-out to Ajouah whose paper won Third Place out of all of the papers presented at the conference!

And a thank you to Professor Lawless. These papers came out of her Qualitative Methods research class and she worked hard mentoring these students through the process of submitting and presenting their papers.

A big congratulations to all of you! Here are some pictures from the event:
