Peer Discussion Responses

My partners were Taylor Dunakin and Alyssa Hollins

Taylor

similarities:

  • both discuss in detail how the rhetorical analyses point out what the ad is trying to do (her, through her own knowledge, me, reciting what was said in the chapter).

differences:

  • mentions that there must be a statement and proof
  • references the geico advertisement
  • she goes in depth in the maybelline ad

Alyssa

similarities:

  • Her and I focused on one ad and pointed out different aspects of our respective choices.

Differences:

  • She goes specifically into the ad about Geico
  • she gives her point of view on why rhetorical analyses are good and useful. It was insightful.

All three of our perspectives were in line with their usefulness. We focused on different aspects of the reading but I feel I understand the reading better now.

Rhetorical Analysis of a Visual Argument

My partners are Daniela and DamilolaDarren Aronofsky's Yves Saint Laurent Ad For La Nuit de L'Homme With Vincent Cassel - Pursuitist | Best fragrance for men, Perfume ad, Yves saint laurent

  • The image is in black and white.
  • Appeared in 2009
  • There are a lot of women on him which sends a message that this could be your life if you were to buy this cologne. This plays into the emotion (ethos) of men, using the appeal of sex and acceptance.
  • The man is Vincent Cassell, a French actor. He is shown in a suit to further bolster the brand’s credibility (pathos). Essentially, if this actor who gets a lot of women and is successful uses it, then maybe I should too.
  • The image is in black and white to make it more serious. The monochrome nature implies elegance, simplicity, class, prestige.
  • Cassell is placed in the center of the image to draw your attention to him. He is symbolically the center of attention, the big man on campus who demands respect.
  • The suit, black and white color, the sleekness of the product design adds to this mysterious man effect they are going for. He is likened to James Bond who is elegant, mysterious, has women falling over him, etc.
  • “LA Nuit De L’Homme” is french which translates to “The Night of Men” which implies logos because the brand Yves Saint Laurent is trying to express to their audience that wearing this cologne will make you feel like you are living life like a man.
  • Having this text on the bottle also emphasizes their brand of expressing what it will feel wearing this cologne
