November 5: Idioms

Tongue In Cheek: This is something that is said in an insincere manner; it is intended to be taken as a joke. One is not supposed to take something said as tongue in cheek seriously. It is slightly humorous and is intended to be ironic. Ex: When I said I disliked his shirt, it was said with tongue in cheek.

Bite The Dust: This refers to someone who either dies or fails/comes up short for something. Ex: “Another one bites the dust” -Queen

Turn Someone Off: When you turn someone off you make them lose interest. It could also refer to someone losing attraction for you or someone. Ex: Finding out she was a republican was such a turn off.

Eating Someone: When something is eating at you, it means that something is on your mind or bothering you. There may be this feeling of shame/guilt. Ex: I tried to forget about what I did but it’s really eating at me.

Make Ends Meet: You are making it happen. Usually refers to a hard situation in which someone is barely making it through. Ex: We didn’t have a lot growing up but somehow my mom made ends meet.
