September 1: In-Class Activity- Argument Analysis

The San Francisco Chronicle’s editorial board argues in their article “Editorial: FDA approval finally clears the way for a vaccine mandate. What is California waiting for?” published August 25, 2021, that the state of California and the country as a whole should mandate vaccines. They argue that since the FDA approved the vaccine, that there is hardly any reason to stop the government (local, state, federal) from making it mandatory to be immuninized. The last hurdle in this process was the FDA’s approval. The piece is pushing for the federal government to take advantage of this and also wants California, specifically Gavin Newsom to lead the way. The argument is directed towards Newsom and people on the fence about a vaccine mandate to buy into this idea. I would say it isn’t the most effective as it hardly makes a case for the effectiveness of the vaccine and sparsely talks about how safe it is/ its benefits for the general public (it is for people who already know much about the topic).
