September 17: Pulitzer Prize

Tarana Akbari, 12, screams in fear moments after a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a crowd at the Abul Fazel Shrine in Kabul on December 06, 2011.

The picture is taken December 6, 2011 in the Abul Fazel shrine in Kabul, Afghanistan. It is taken on the holy day of Ashura. It was taken because a suicide bomber had gone into the crowd and detonated a bomb killing more than 70 people. The picture was taken by Massoud Hossaini. 12 year old Tarana Akbari is pictured screaming while standing in the middle of a crowd of people. She is visibly terrified as those around her all lay sprawled out on the ground, bloodied and limp. Men, women and children are pictured. Those who are sitting up have looks of panic and distress on their faces. Many lay lifeless, slumped over on the ground, bodies upon bodies and Tarana appears to be the only one not greatly affected by the blast (physically speaking). Your attention is immediately drawn to her as she stands alone and is the center, all in essence making her the focal point. You see this picture and can imagine yourself as this 12 year old girl who stands amongst all this death and anguish.
