I would say the most significant historical event that has positively shaped the future of the United States is the abolishment of slavery. Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States. This was such a grand change in our county because African American people were finally seen as humans, this was the first step in equality and change within society. These people were treated in the worst conditions and compared to as animals, this disgusting time period came to an end in hopes for new generations to prosper from the tragedy of slavery. This has been extremely positive for economy, there is much more people in the labor force rather than free labor, and just overall better for humankind. It was unfair and unjust nobody deserves to be treated as less than just because of the color of your skin.
Since then there has been major changes in society such as changes towards segregation. There went from separate bathrooms and schools for kids of color and white kids to everyone having access to the same things/ opportunities.
