Remembering John Lewis and C.T. Vivian

Mug shots of CT Vivian (left) and John Lewis (right). One year ago, on July 17, 2000, we lost two of the greatest heroes of the nonviolent Black Freedom Movement of the United States: Rev. C. T. Vivian, and Congressman John Lewis.

We share below is a short video clip of a deeply personal interview with C.T. Vivian, filmed by the Wondros production company at Rev. Vivian’s Atlanta home in October 2019. The interview was conducted by Rev. Vivian’s close friend Rev. Dr. Gerald L. Durley. In retrospect, this video is a treasure, as it was almost certainly his last interview. I feel extremely honored and moved to have been there to watch the filming, to have met Rev. Vivian personally, and to be in his beautiful presence with Rev. Durley on that day.

Here is a short film made by the USF film team to honor Rev. Vivian and Congressman Lewis, and to share the work of our Institute. This is the film, made by our USF team Jennifer Halse, Katie Morgan and Hunter Deuel, that won an Emmy (for Education/Schools — Long Form Content) at the 50th Annual Northern California Area EMMY Awards.

We remember Congressman Lewis and Reverend Vivian with love. Especially now, as we are fighting against a retrenchment in voting rights across the country, we must continue their nonviolent struggle to realize the promise of our democracy and redeem the soul of America.
