The September selection for the USF Book Club is The Road by Cormac McCarthy.
In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize, this was one of the more controversial selections chosen by Oprah Winfrey for her book club, so we are bound to have a great discussion next month.
We’re meeting on Tuesday Sept. 9, 2008 from 12 noon – 1 pm in the Seminar Room of Gleeson Library (2nd Fl).
Bring your lunch and invite your colleagues!
To get the book through the library’s free service, Link+, click here.
Link+ takes about 4 business days and the book is delivered to the participating library of your choice, including Gleeson.
Hope to see you there!
The USF Book Club is co-sponsored by the Well Life Dept. and limited to faculty and staff of the University.
Good choice! If anyone would like a paperback copy, we can order it at the USF bookstore and I can discount it 20% for you. It takes 2-3 days to arrive. Just stop by the store and ask for Jerry.
I’ve read Blood Meridian and The Crossing by McCarthy. Both were tremendous evocations of a time and place, specifically the US-Mexican border. His writing style is spartan, and BM is extremely violent. Both books are moving, and stay with you. The Road is a change of pace for him, and I’m eager to read everyone’s thoughts.
Excellent! Thank you, Jerry. I hope you can come to the Book Club meeting too. This looks really good. I see from the reviews that it’s a post-apocalypic father-and-son journey. The reviewer from the S.F. Chronicle called it “stunning and heart-wrenching… It is a book with a gorgeous and startling heart.”
I’m glad other people are enthusiastic! I read _The Road_ last fall and became obsessed with it. I wrote poems inspired by it, recommended it every chance I got, and even had dreams about the apocalypse that inspired me to develop an apocalypse emergency plan. (I know, I’m weird!) So I am really looking forward to September’s meeting!
Wow…The Road sounds awesome. I NEED to rejoin the book club!!!
