USF Book Club: The Road by Cormac McCarthy

  1. Good choice! If anyone would like a paperback copy, we can order it at the USF bookstore and I can discount it 20% for you. It takes 2-3 days to arrive. Just stop by the store and ask for Jerry.
I’ve read Blood Meridian and The Crossing by McCarthy. Both were tremendous evocations of a time and place, specifically the US-Mexican border. His writing style is spartan, and BM is extremely violent. Both books are moving, and stay with you. The Road is a change of pace for him, and I’m eager to read everyone’s thoughts.

  2. Excellent! Thank you, Jerry. I hope you can come to the Book Club meeting too. This looks really good. I see from the reviews that it’s a post-apocalypic father-and-son journey. The reviewer from the S.F. Chronicle called it “stunning and heart-wrenching… It is a book with a gorgeous and startling heart.”

  3. I’m glad other people are enthusiastic! I read _The Road_ last fall and became obsessed with it. I wrote poems inspired by it, recommended it every chance I got, and even had dreams about the apocalypse that inspired me to develop an apocalypse emergency plan. (I know, I’m weird!) So I am really looking forward to September’s meeting!
