Gleeson Library/Art+Feminism* 2017 Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon
A Women’s History Month Program
Thursday, March 9, 2017
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Gleeson Library 2nd Floor
In conjunction with the New York-based organization Art+Feminism and USF’s Art + Architecture program, Gleeson Library is hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon.
Join us in adding content to Wikipedia articles to improve the representation of women in art. Librarians will guide you through a tutorial on navigating Wikipedia, identifying reputable sources, and editing articles. If you are already savvy in Wikipedia editing, we will set you up with reference materials to get started right away.
There is a proven “gender gap” on Wikipedia.* Fewer women editors mean that the representation of women and topics related to women are under-represented on the site. It’s been noted that the content of articles about women and men or topics related to women and men on Wikipedia tend to differ as well. For example, articles about women tend to focus on their personal lives, rather than their professional accomplishments.
Anyone with an internet connection can access Wikipedia. That means individuals and communities who can’t afford books and/or libraries, as well as individuals and communities who do not have funds for expensive journal subscriptions and database access.
Can access to information be a social justice issue? How might you use Wikipedia as a tool for social justice?
Want to get a head start? Create your Wikipedia account now!
Can’t come to this event? You can still participate!
