Library Streaming Video Changes Sept. 1

The USF community has access to tens of thousands of videos and clips owned or licensed by Gleeson Library. You’ll find the library’s streaming video collections listed here; individual titles from these collections as well as DVDs, where streaming access is not available, are listed in the library catalog.

Beginning September 1, 2018, the Library is changing the way we get access to streaming videos from one of our streaming collections, Kanopy.  This change will make our Kanopy licensing more like the way we license streaming videos from other sources, and will help us make better-informed decisions about library spending on this rapidly-growing acquisitions area.

Under the new “mediated” licensing model, faculty must let us know in advance, preferably at least two weeks ahead of time, when a video is needed for a class. This is because the high cost of the former “patron-driven acquisition” model, in which licenses for streaming videos are triggered upon viewing, is not sustainable for the library with our current budget.

Here’s how it will work:

Videos from Kanopy, and some of our other streaming videos as well, are licensed for one year at a time. So, even if a video was available previously, be sure to check the catalog to make sure it’s still accessible before assigning it to students.

If you click on a Kanopy video we don’t currently license, you’ll see a request form. For students, if you see the request form, please ask a librarian for assistance in obtaining access to the film. For faculty, you can use the form to let us know a film is needed, or you can contact your library liaison. If we don’t have access to the film we’ll attempt to license or purchase it in the way that best meets faculty needs for teaching.
