USF Masters in Public Health students Lindsay Barbic, Cynthia Gutierrez, Roberto Herrera and Josephine Borogo are the most recent contributors to Student Social Justice Exhibits. Their installation on homelessness and San Francisco Libraries focuses on the intersection of patrons experiencing homelessness and direct services provided by San Francisco Public Library librarians and social workers.
Group members state “since 2009, the staff at the San Francisco Public Library has helped more than approximately 300 people access temporary and permanent housing. Some of the other services provided by San Francisco Public Library staff include assisting individuals experiencing homelessness with finding locations for safe spaces to sleep, showers and personal hygiene resources, legal aid, food and nutrition services, access to medical care, and mental health services.” This exhibit provides information on the history of the library in San Francisco, community partners that they work with and the some of the services they provide to homeless individuals.
This exhibit was inspired by the School of Nursing and Health Profession’s 2019 Crawford Lecture. This year’s Crawford Lecture, scheduled for April 9th, 2019, features Dr. Ensign, the author of Catching Homelessness, Winner, 2017 American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award and of Soul Stories: Voices from the Margins.
