Once again we celebrate International Open Access Week (October 23-29)—this year by thinking about the “importance of community control of knowledge sharing systems” with the theme of Community over Commercialization. SPARC organizes Open Access Week as part of its mission to “support systems for research and education that are open by default and equitable by design.” Gleeson Library invites you to take a look at open access resources and answer a brief survey…
You too can celebrate Open Access Week by:
- From October 20-30, visiting our display at Gleeson Library.
- Fill out a brief survey about your textbook costs. We will share the results in November.
- Think about questions like:
- What is lost when a shrinking number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves?
- When does the collection and use of personal data begin to undermine academic freedom?
- How can we shift the default toward using community-minded options?
This week and any time, you can look at the many open access resources available from platforms like:
- OAPEN academic books (Read more about OAPEN in last year’s blog post.)
- Directory of Open Access Books and Journals
- MIT Press open access Books and Journals (Gleeson Library has contributed funding to make these materials open access.)
- arXiv open access archive for scholarly articles
- The USF Scholarship Repository
- Knowledge Unlatched Open Research Library and Journal Collection (Gleeson Library has contributed funding to make these materials open access.)
- Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO)
This year’s International Open Access Week events are a collaboration between Nicola Andrews, Open Education Librarian, and Justine Withers, Electronic and Continuing Resources Catalog Librarian. Special thanks to our student assistants for helping put up the display.
