Ever wondered if the library subscribes to a daily or weekly newspaper?
Ever had a professor or fellow student recommend a particular journal but not be sure how to access it?
Ever want to browse the archive of a popular magazine you love but keep hitting a paywall?
A searchable listing of every journal, magazine, and newspaper we have in our collection
whether online or in print.
From our library home page, links to Journal Finder are found in the drop-down menu under “Search” on the upper left of the page as well as in the center of the page under “More Research Tools” below the Fusion search box.
The initial search page explains the range of material available both online and in print.
Enter the title of any publication into the search box and click “search”. This will bring you to the results screen listing relevant library holdings.
For instance, you might try searching for local newspaper the San Francisco Chronicle:
When looking at Journal Finder results, you will see the publication title with ISSN and other relevant identification followed by Full Text Access links to database(s) providing publication content.
Beneath the database links to publication content are dates indicating the range of access available.
In the case of the San Francisco Chronicle you can see we have a number of online resources providing varying year ranges of access.
The record also shows we have print holdings, which are shelved up to the current issue for six months on our newspaper shelving area on the second floor, south-side of the building, as well as microform holdings for years 1950-2013.
Harper’s Magazine is one publication you might have recommended to you by a professor or friend.
Looking at holdings in Journal Finder you can see many of the links to databases have similar years of coverage.
There are notably several links to Gale databases with identical coverage dates. Continue scrolling, however, and you can see that access extends as far back as 1850 via the ProQuest Periodicals Archive Online Foundation Collection.
You can also see we have print holdings, including current issues. The open dash at the end of the holdings statement, “v.341, no.2042 (Jul 2020)-” indicates the subscription is active and ongoing.
All currently subscribed print Gleeson Periodicals (non-newspapers) are shelved on the second floor, northeast-side of the building.
Similar to the ProQuest Archive holdings above for Harper’s, we also have online historical archives for several major popular magazines, such as Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Vogue.
When searching Journal Finder, sometimes these archival holdings appear further down in the results than other holdings.
Take Rolling Stone, at the top of the results is an entry with the majority of holdings available:
While directly below is the result with the complete archive content.
A reminder that you want to check all results in Journal Finder and always pay close attention to the dates of coverage.
There are also a couple other features of the Journal Finder page worth noting.
In the upper right corner, there is a link to “Search Home”. This brings up an easily searchable “browse publications by name” option.
Directly next to that link is a “Browse Subject” link which allows you to see just how many publications Journal Finder contains per area. For instance, there are over 5,000 for Education and near 2,000 covering fine Arts.
We encourage you to now explore Journal Finder on your own!
