Feb 9: Adobe Spark Practice

After watching the video that further explained how to use Adobe Spark, I learned that you can remove narration by clicking on the time and pressing ¨remove narration¨. It is also very important to know that I can adjust the volume of the music and narration, this is important so that they will not overpower one another. I was worried about the narration sounding awkwardly timed/abruptly cut off, but now I know to wait for 1/2 a second before and after recording. I am confident in my ability to add information and photos t the slides, then further explain them with narration.

Feb 8: Free Writing for Audio Essay

I applied for my first library card when I was seven years old, and that is when my relationship with the Sonoma County Library started. Every Wednesday, my mom and I would drive a few blocks to the library and scour the bookshelves for hours, looking for our next reading adventure. The maximum amount of books you could check was fourteen; somehow, every Wednesday I would pick out fourteen books and read them throughout the duration of the week. I was obsessed with reading and the tradition of finding new stories to read.

Tragically, at the age of twelve, I lost one of the books checked out. Now I know that I could´ve just paid the price of the book and gone on my merry way, but the shame of losing the book was too much to bear. I never went back (eventually my overdue fees were forgiven). This started my love of finding and owning my own literature.

When I was started to be introduced to the more serious books in middle and high school, I did not feel as connected to the reading. This was especially prevalent in the last couple of years of high school. Some students of color and myself created a BIPOC Coalition in the summer of 2020 to address racial issues that revolved around the students, staff, and community of the school, this Coalition was heavily supported by my former principal. One of our proposals was to alter/add more reading materials written by and about people of color. We felt that there was a lack of representation in the current required readings. The school listened and implemented more book into the curriculum that was written by/about people of color.

OUTLINE:

  • start the audio essay with a photo of me as a child reading
  • talk about the importance of finding new books/stories to read
  • reading in high school/middle school but not feeling connected to any of the material (show some of the books that were required reading in school)
  • started the BIPOC Coalition because I (plus many other students of color) did not feel represented in the literature/materials used in class (plus other issues)
  • show books we recommend to the school board and books that were implemented into the list of required reading
  • touchback on the importance of people (especially young kids/teens) to have accurate and positive representations of themselves in the literature
  • address how younger people should get comfortable challenging older people/people in authority

Feb 3: Argument Activity/Group Writing

By: AJ Corral, Izabella Williams, and Melissa Zilinki

In the San Francisco Chronicle’s article “Wildfires in January? Scientists say climate change could fuel ‘continuous fire season’” by Kurtis Alexander I, he argues to increase awareness and spark change in regards to climate change. The author is a reporter for San Francisco Chronicle and specializes in climate emergencies taking place in the American West. Alexander addresses San Francisco locals, primarily liberals, to urgently warn them about the increasing “fire season” in California. Using forensic argumentation, he brings up data from past fires/climate emergencies to explain the current climate emergencies happening out of their designated seasons.

Feb 3: Discussion Post

Responding to Edwin Iglesias´ post.

I also found it shocking that families in China were advised and forced to limit the number of children born (one per family). This rule added extra stress and burdens on families because they are worried about the repercussions of having more than one child. Having a computer when they were first introduced was a massive privilege, they were able to reach resources and information that many others were not privy to. That put the ones who were already privileged at more of an advantage than other people who cannot afford the luxuries of a computer. I feel in today´s world, especially now with Covid-19/online school, you must have a computer in order to receive an education. Most assignments, testing, study materials, and information needed to succeed in a class in found online. I am glad that this technology has become more accessible to the general public, but there are still many people who still do not have access to this kind of technology. I believe that your response is meeting the guidelines of a discussion post, and your cover what the prompt was asking for.

Feb 1: Discussion Response

Responding to Xena´s post.

The main idea of your response is to explain how logos and ethos relate to arguments of the fact, by using the credibility and logic of proven fact as evidence to support your claim or argument. This is different from my own post because I chose to write about the arguments of understanding, the point of this argument is to keep an open mind and be willing to change one opinion, it is not solely based on fact, but is reliant on opinion. I think that a blend of both the argument of fact and argument of understanding if you badger someone with facts and do not allow them to think and mull over the information that was just given to them, then they will be less likely to change their mind or accept the facts as the ¨truth¨. From your post, I learned that there are moments in your arguments when you should use facts, that will make your claim stronger. I do not have the textbook but responded to the prompt with knowledge of the different types of arguments that I have, this also prohibited me to read about kairos. I do not believe that you responded to the final portion of the discussion prompt.

Feb 1: Meaning of Name

My full name is Izabella Lee Lee Williams.

My name is Hebrew and means ¨God is my oath¨, it is also a variant of the name Isabel and Elizabeth. My parents and family are not religious. My mom wanted to name me Isabella but thought it should be more unique so switched the ¨s¨ to a ¨z¨. My middle name is inspired by my great grandmother (on my mother´s side) Velva Lee. The last Williams is of Irish/Scottish/Welsh origin, which is fitting because my dad is Scottish-Irish. When I was little I would only go by ¨Bella¨ because people would always spell my name incorrectly (with a ¨s¨ instead of a ¨z¨), also Izabella felt too grown up for me. All of my friends and family still call me Bella, but now in a more professional setting, like class/work, I go by Izabella. I have never changed my name. At home I only speak English, I am currently learning Spanish. I do not feel that I have ever been ridiculed for the way I speak or write.
