This photo was taken on May 3 2022, just a month prior to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Many people took to the streets to protest the Supreme Court’s probable upcoming decision in an effort to prevent a decision which will majorly impact the lives of women across the country. The women in this photo are calling for their rights to be protected. Roe vs. Wade is meant to show the government that women’s bodies belong to themselves and the choice is ultimately theirs to make. In the photo we see many people are against the recent events that were taken against Roe vs. Wade and we can use the image to argue that people demand to have their reproductive rights federally protected. This belief also spans across many age groups and men and women. In the image they are calling for action to be taken and to uphold Roe vs. Wade and how it’s imperative to health care.
The photo captured a group of women braving to protest the breach of their natural rights and bodily autonomy. Within this frame just two signs are legible: A sign with a coat hanger and the words “Never Again”; the other one with the words “Abortion is Healthcare”. The coat hanger highlights the irony of the decision being that prior to the legalization of abortion and the medicine needed women were forced to terminate unwanted and/or dangerous pregnancies using a coat hanger. The advancement of a safe medical abortion led to the making of abortion mandates and laws; eventually leading to the passing of Roe vs Wade. Since the 1980’s abortion laws have been progressing, giving those with uteruses more freedom and bodily autonomy. Until the 2022 overturning of the short standing yet impactful reign of Roe vs. Wade, taking the country back three decades in terms of bodily autonomy and medical rights. The overturning of Roe vs. Wade will allow conservative states to enforce their own mandates and laws on abortion, taking away reproductive choices and rights.
