Portuguese at USF

Portuguese is a romance language spoken by over 260 million people around the world, and it is the most spoken language in the southern hemisphere.  It is also one of the top ten languages used in the internet.
Brazil — where Portuguese is the official language — is the fifth largest country in the world, has dinamic economic, political and social scenarios and is a big player in the world these days. There are many reasons to learn Portuguese. Join us and you will be glad you did it!

USF offers Portuguese language classes as follows:

Fall:
PORT 101 (First Semester Portuguese, 4 units),
PORT 201(Second Semester Portuguese, 4 units)

Spring:
PORT 102 (Third Semester Portuguese, 4 units)

The courses above include a mandatory one-hour weekly group conversation class with a tutor for nine weeks of the semester outside of the class meeting time.

Portuguese Language Placement Test
If you want to take our Portuguese courses and already have some knowledge of the language  you may request to take a Portuguese Language Placement Test to get evaluated and then enrolled in the correct class for your level. First semester classes are for true beginners only.

Submitting a Portuguese language waiver request
If you are proficient in Portuguese and would like to have that language waived, contact the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at (415) 422-2802 or the email the Portuguese language instructor to schedule a Portuguese language placement test.
