I read Kaashvi’s response

In Kaashvi’s response she talks about how humans should be blamed on climate change because we do not take care of our resources. Many people say they want to make a change and stop climate change, but they never do anything. As kaashvi stated in her response, “People can talk about this topic of climate change for hours and hours but no one knows what to change.” I agree completely on this quote because that is exactly what happens. People see a problem and say they are going to do something about it and never do. Regarding to climate change, this is horrific. If people do not start to stop climate change then we will have nothing.

Climate change as a whole affects our daily lives. It affects the air, water, animals, etc. By not trying to stop climate change, we are basically just killing ourselves. We have only ourselves to blame for the environment and we can help stop it, if we tried. As people we need to join together and help stop climate change.

November 15th: In Class Writing

The most historical event that has shaped the future of my country is the Garifuna Settlement Day, which is celebrated every single year on the 19th of November. Garifuna people have mixed ancestry of African, Arawak and Caribbean.  This holiday celebrates the arrival of the Garifuna people onto the shores of Belize which was in 1802. This holiday is celebrated for the entire week throughout Belize. During this time, there are different events that go on such as  parades, singing, drumming, and special performances reenacting the first Garifuna settlers who came to Belize.

This historical event becomes relevant today because we still celebrate it and honor the Garifuna culture. Every 19th of November, my family and I invite other family members who play the drum and sing in Garifuna. We dance and make different kinds of belizean food just to celebrate the day overall. This day is just one of the most important events that has ever happened in Belize and it always will be.

November 6th- Essay 2 Feedback

After reading the comments given to me on my essay, I can conclude that I I need to improve my APA format skills. I can improve this by referring to the sample APA paper in modules on canvas. I can also look up examples on Purdue to help me. Another aspect I have to improve in my essay is to tie both of the main ideas of the essays together seamlessly. This way I would have a strong argument and analysis of the topic. I can improve this in my essay by analyzing the essays separate and then seeing what they have in common.

Identify 3 key features of the assignment that seem to be specific to a video essay

What are the main 3 requirements that this essay asks for?

Three main requirements that this essay asks for is informing students on a major, research, and between 3 to 4 minutes. Informing students on a major is an important thing in this assignment. In order to inform students you must make up information from what you have learned in your major in order to make a project about it. Another thing that was mentioned was research. For this video essay, it must include three sources to support the project. If there was no research then you wouldn’t have anything to back up what you are saying. One last thing is the video must be between 3-4 minutes. You must be able to give all the information in that amount of time or points will be taken off.

Explanation:

In the image it shows a penny with the words police shot a black man in hi own home through his garage door and a jury decided his life was worth four pennies. Then it goes on to say to shut up about NFL players kneeling. In the picture, the argument being said is that people don’t care about a black mans death, but when there is a protest then people start to complain. In 2019, NFL players kneeled during the national anthem to bring attention to issues of racial injustice and police brutality. Many people supported this, but others did not. Some people who disagreed with the kneeling stated that they were being disrespectful to the country.

Book: Language, Power, and Pedagogy: Bilingual Children in the Crossfire

In the book, “Language, Power, and Pedagogy: Bilingual Children in the Crossfire” it talks about the idea of including all races with language. It introduces a concept of transforming the future. In the book it states, “Maria del Socorro Leandro… spoke of the two-way bilingual immersion program in Edgewood that brings together English-dominant and Spanish-dominant students in the same classrooms with the goal of promoting fluent bilingualism and bi-literacy for both groups of student (Cummins 3).” In this quote it talks about the importance of joining together two different languages in one room so one side of the class can help teach the others their language and vice versa. This way both sides will be able to learn and teach at the same time. Talking about language it is a big factor of someone’s identity. The language that you speak portrays your culture and represents you as a whole. Another example in the book states,”Educators who remembered the very recent past…, when Mexican Americans were treated as an inferior species by all institutions of society, were using the power of language and education to repudiate that past and evoke a very different future (Cummins 3).” In this quote it talks about the changing of the past into the future for language. This is important because language as a whole gives people power to their culture. The fact that the educators were bringing this idea of inclusiveness to the classroom enhances the idea of language.

Passage 1:
A man from the city came to visit a small farm, he saw a farmer feeding pigs in a very strange
way. The farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby apple tree, the pig would eat the apples directly
off the tree. The farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was full, then
he would start again with another pig.
The man from the city was pretty puzzled, he watched for quiet a while, finally said, “What a
strange way to feed pigs! It’s a waist of time! You could save a hole lot of time if you just shook
the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!” The farmer looked puzzled and
replied, “What’s time to a pig?”

09/16/19 Language learning story

A language learning story that I have is learning Spanish. In my class, me and two others were the only ones who didn’t know Spanish at all. We had many fluent speakers and I felt like an outcast. When taught different conjugations I had a difficult time memorizing them. I would try my best to keep up, but I started to fall behind. This motivated me to study harder and harder by using studying applications such as Quizlet. By the time of the test or quiz I would know all the conjugations by heart. From learning Spanish, the thing that I loved the most was learning different vocabulary words. Learning vocabulary words excited me because I could look at different items or things and know how to say it in Spanish. Another difficulty that I had in Spanish was pronouncing the words. When I would say the words in Spanish many of the native speakers would laugh because I was saying it differently. I didn’t let this stop me from continuing my Spanish learning experience.

One thing that I learned through this experience is that you should never give up. When I was struggling I didn’t give up because I wanted to learn Spanish. Yes I was saying the words differently than the native speakers, but you have to make mistakes in order to get better. My experience has helped me with my academic experience because I know that I can always learn something if I just put in the work and ask for help. If you practice little by little you will start to understand the material and will feel successful.
