After reading Nadine’s and JJ’s reading response, I noticed some similarities and differences:

Similarities:

• We all spoke about our experience growing up around languages other than English.
• We all had examples that involve Tan’s mother.
• All agreed that Tan’s mothers ‘broken’ English was not something that needed to be fixed.

Differences:

• Nadine and JJ focused more on the way Tan’s mother spoke English differently.
• I gave more examples on her having to grow up and translate for her mother.
• Nadine said the author used ethos and logos.
• I thought the author was using more emotional appeals and trying to relate and convey something with her personal experience.

I thought Nadine had a unique in her response to the issues of argumentative techniques as she saw that the author utilized ethos and logos to make a strong argument.

Exercise 1:

   4. Amphibians are vertebrates that live on land and in the water, and flatworms are invertebrates that live only in water.
   5. Ashley carefully fed and watered her tomato plants all summer, so the tomatoes grew juicy and ripe.
   6. When he lost his car key, Simon attempted to open the door with a wire hanger, a credit card, and a paperclip; nevertheless, he called the manufacturer for advice.

Exercise 2:

1. 1. Jake is going to Mexico where there are beautiful beaches.
   2. There will be long delivery delays this week because a snowstorm disrupted traffic all over the east coast.
   3. Since my neighbor had his television volume turned up too high, I banged on his door and asked him to keep the noise down.
   4. Jessica prepared the potato salad and the sautéed vegetables while Ashley marinated the chicken.
   5. After Romeo poisons himself, Juliet awakes to find Romeo dead and stabs herself with a dagger.
