18 November

It was January 17, 2005, and three cadets were training to become police detectives. The sergeant
decided to test their skill at recognizing a suspect. He showed the first cadet a picture for five
seconds and then hid it. Then he said, “That was your suspect, how would you recognize
That’s easy, answered the cadet. “We would find him fast because he only has one eye”.
The sergeant thought a minute and then answered, “Well that’s because the picture I showed you
is a profile. It shows only a side view.” He couldn’t believe the cadet had given him such a
ridiculous answer, but he went on to the second cadet and flashed the picture for five seconds to
him. Again, he asked, “That was your suspect, how would you recognize him?”
The second cadet smiled and said, “It would be easy to catch because he has only one ear!”
The police sergeant shook his head in disbelief. Then angrily responded, “What’s the matter
with you two? Of course, only one eye and one ear are showing, it’s a picture of his profile! Was
that the best answer you can come up with?!”
Extremely frustrated at this point, he showed the picture to the 3rd cadet and in a very testy voice
asked, “This is your suspect. How would you recognize him?” He quickly added, “Think hard
before giving me a stupid answer.”
The cadet looked at the picture intently for a moment. Then she said, “The suspect wears contact
The sergeant was speechless. He went to his office checked the suspect’s file on his computer and
came back. He was beaming. “It’s true! The suspect does indeed wear contact lenses. Tell us how
you were able to make such an astute observation!”
“It was easy,” said the cadet. “He can’t wear glasses because he only has one eye and one ear.”
I strongly agree with Yijie’s response. He says “people around the world do not much about climate change”, “climate change is such a big problem, everyone should be aware of it” and “humans causing climate change and global warming”. Mumbai, my home city, is facing horrific climate change. What’s more horrendous is, is the fact that most of the population of Mumbai is unaware of the same. One of the biggest contributors to climate change is the extensive use of plastic, which is why the state government banned the use of plastic in the city. Rather than the citizens of Mumbai being happy about the fact that less plastic will be used, therefore lesser global warming, they were outraged when the ban was got into existence because a lot of businesses and citizens of Mumbai used plastic for day to day work due to it cheap price and agility, however the reason why the citizens of Mumbai were in a state of outrage was because they were not at all aware about how much damage plastic was doing to our environment. In Mumbai, it is also true that the rich care about climate change than those who are rather financially unstable, the rich citizens of Mumbai have been making many large investments to find methods of recycling and to avoid climate change. however, the ones who are financially unstable are merely adjusting to the changing climate and are ready to live in an environment, which is being damaged drastically day after day. In my opinion, the amount of money you have should not come in the picture, if you really care about the environment, and do the smallest of things such as carpooling or using public transport, it will significantly help to improve the conditions of Mumbai’s environment.

One incident that positively changed the future of my country took place in the year 1947, India got freedom from the “British Raj (rule)”. The conditions of Indian citizens were horrifying on their own soil, anyone who tried fighting for freedom was arrested and beaten brutally. One significant personality who stood out and had a huge contribution towards India gaining their freedom was Mahatma Gandhi, they had several protests, debates and campaigns to fight the British rule. This has had a huge impact on my country, as every single citizen of India now has a sense of freedom. However, because of the British rule 85% of the population can communicate in English. The Britishers also

introduced several aspect of Britian in India such as their architechture, public transport and language. This is relevant today because a lot of how India operates today, is from the insights of how the british ran the country. I chose to write about this incident, because as an Indian I feel extremely proud about how my country gained it’s independence and the hardships they faced in doing the same.

There is no one in my family who has a leadership role, rather the leadership role is shared by all in the family, and everyone’s opinions and suggestions are considered and whatever decision is taken by anyone in the family is always for the betterment of everyone in the family. My family never believed in arranged marriages, my grandparents were in a relationship for 7 years before getting married and my parents have known each other since high school, and then had alone marriage. Women have been facing a lot of gender inequality in today’s society, this cruelty towards women should be stopped, this would allow them to excel and achieve everything they deserve.

After reading Mr. Tika’s comments, I realised that my strengths are summarising and synthesizing, I will continute to maintain quality in these two essay writing skills for more effecvtive responses/essays in the future. Organization of essay was not done effectively, the rerason for this, in my opinion, is that there was lot of content I was working with, however with the mindset of learning from all mistakes, I will take this as a positive takeaway as I learned that the way I organised the essay was not effective, and will make sure essays/responses are organised more effectively, with more attention. My essay also lacked references top outside research, which aid to make the essay more argumentative/informative, I will add two or more outside references to my essays/responses to persuade the audience more effectively.

The way Huzaifa has introduced the online essay in his response is excellent. Futhermore, the way he has summarised the entire essay is extremely good. Although he has written an extrmely good summary, Huzaifa has not paid attention to the guiding question while writing the response, he has set his entire focus on summarising the essay, whereas while writing my response I kept focusing on the guiding questions, which wanted to know our likes and dislikes of the onloine essay, and in my opinion thats the main difference between mine and Huzaifa’s response.

Run-on Sentences and Comma Splices

1. Definition:

a) Run-on sentence:

Two or more independent clauses are joined together without a coordinating conjunction and without punctuation.

(e.g.: * Janet left for work early she arrived late.)

b) Comma splice:

Two or more clauses are joined with a comma but without a coordination conjunction.

(e.g.: * Janet left for work early, she arrived late.)

2. Some strategies for revision

Because run-on sentences and comma splices occur when two independent clauses are joined, you can correct either error using one of five methods

Examples: * Janet left for work early she arrived late. (run-on sentence)

* Janet left for work early, she arrived late (comma splice)

a) Use a period:

b) Use a semicolon:

Janet left for work early; she arrived late.

c) Use a comma plus a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)

Janet left for work early, but she arrived late.

d) Use a semicolon and a transitional word (besides, consequently, however, moreover, etc)

Janet left for work early; however, she arrived late.

e) Change one of the clauses to a subordinate clause by means of a subordinating conjunction

Although Janet left for work early, she arrived late.

Identify the error type of the following sentences as run-on (R), comma splice (CS), or correct (C). Then correct the sentences.

A diverse workforce is a group of employees with different social, national, culture and racial backgrounds, such a combination of employees stems for an enviornment of multiculturalism in their behaviour. However, in a study conducted in 12 countries from the continent of Europe, which investigated the relationship between Productivity and Diversity, the results stated “Cultural diversity may affect productivity through negative externalities more than positive externalities” (Karim & Zaki, 2019, p. 80). Moreover, this implies that businesses may start reducing their focus from having a diverse and multiculture workforce.
