November 19: Individual Writing Assignment

Race, in many more ways than not, is a social construct. There are basic differences often found in people of different “races” such as a difference in skin color, but there are no true genetics that are solely unique to one race or another, humans are all the same on a genetic level.

Differences in inherited physical attributes has nothing to due with one’s intelligence or personality, it is simply a product of evolution. For example, groups of people who have lived closer to the equator often have darker skin; this is not due to a lack of intelligence or inferior genes, they simply evolved to have skin better suited to protect them from the sun and heat.

One other reason race is a social construct is the culture attributed to that race(s). People often don’t like what they don’t know or aren’t used to; whether they fear it, dislike it because it isn’t their own tradition, et cetera, but that doesn’t mean that any one culture is better or worse than another. Though cultures are and should be treated equal, people unfortunately suppress certain races attributed to certain cultures because it isn’t what they know, deepening the social construct that is race.
