About Me
Greetings everybody, my name is Shari Almario and I am currently a senior Business Administration student at the University of San Francisco. Coming from Los Angeles, I have gained a whole new perspective and I only want to continue enriching myself in the culture, as well as the diverse community San Francisco has to offer. This fall semester I am blessed to be continuing my internship for the African American Arts and Culture Complex. My duties entail assisting all of the staff members with coordinating any of the anticipated events for the organization as well as any administration tasks around the office. The blog’s purpose is to be a voice and a visual for the community to showcase what the African American Arts and Culture Complex has to offer.
Mission & Vision
The African American Art and Culture Complex (AAACC) is a community based, 501(c)3 arts and cultural organization. Our mission is to empower our community through Afro-centric artistic and cultural expression, mediums, education and programming.
We are dedicated to inspiring children and youth to serve as agents of change, cultivating their leadership skills and fostering a commitment to community service and activism. In addition, we encourage, support and promote the work of young, aspiring Bay Area artists. We also strive to develop partnerships with organizations that are similarly committed to our mission, and offer our space to the community for special events.
History
The AAACC has enjoyed a long and storied history in San Francisco.
In July 1989, Supervisor Willie B. Kennedy forwarded a resolution to the Board of Supervisors that urged the Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco to consider the sale or long-term lease of the Western Addition Cultural Center to better reflect the needs of the community in terms of programming, management and operations. The resolution passed unanimously.
Ms. Geraldine Johnson helped shape the preliminary draft legislation and efforts began in earnest to forge a new entity – a cultural center that would serve the community for generations to come. The community turned to the leadership of the Wajumbe Cultural Institution, Inc., and the San Francisco African American Historical Society – two of the oldest African American cultural organizations in San Francisco. A new non-profit corporation was formed in 1989 – the Center for African and African American Art and Culture. Since then, the name of the center has changed, but our mission and values remain the same: to provide a space in San Francisco and beyond for cross-cultural understanding through the celebration of African and African American experiences and history.
Today, the African American Arts & Culture Complex is a vital resource in San Francisco, adding to the city’s rich culture and diversity. We serve not only San Francisco’s African American community, but also the entire San Francisco Bay Area, as well as tourists.
We are dedicated to community change by fostering a commitment to service and activism through Afro-centric artistic and cultural performance, exhibition and programming. Our 34,000 sq. ft. facility houses an art gallery and three art exhibitions spaces, a 203 seat theater, a recording studio, library and archives of African American history, two dance studios and other multi-purpose space.
We offer visual and performing arts programs and classes including music, dance, theatre, audio recording, and arts and crafts. We also offer affordable performing arts venues for a host of community events, meetings, performances, art exhibits, trainings and conferences.
Our space also serves as a home to some of the most respected performing arts organizations in the Bay Area, including AfroSolo Theatre Company, the African American Shakespeare Company and Cultural Odyssey. Other resident art organizations include the San Francisco African American Historical and Cultural Society, the San Francisco Juneteenth Festival, Take Wings Foundation, Robert Henry Johnson and SF Noir.

Greetings,
My name is Shari Almario and I am a senior majoring in Business Administration at the University of San Francisco. For PSIP this fall I will be continuing my services at the African American Art and Culture Complex. It was a great experience last semester and I am glad to be working in this environment again. With this internship, I hope to gain more insight of the on fieldwork of events at this organization. Last year I assisted with the event planning leading up to the event with the Program Manager, Tamika Chenier.
Above is a picture of my work area, where I answer phones and do assigned tasks, like making google docs of media outlets in order to publicize events and creating checklists to ensure that everything is organized for an upcoming event. My desk is right in front of the main office door, so I greet anybody that will visit and direct the visitor to the staff member they are trying to reach.
I am excited to continue my internship for this culturally focused organization and look forward to grasping as much knowledge during my time here. Stay tuned for my journey in this experience!

Above are photos from the annual haunted house on Halloween where brave children entered the spooky darkness to give them some fright in the spirit of Halloween. On one of my days at the AAACC, I was assigned to help take apart the haunted house. Honestly, I am not a fan of this holiday and even though the lights were on while taking down the long spiders, rubber rats, and holding oversized bats it was still very traumatizing. So, I commend and applaud all the brave youth that entered into this haunted house.
The next big event is the annual Holiday Fair and Toy Drive, which include many activities performed by the youth participants and dance classes. It is a free festival that is for children of all ages. Yet, what comes with having this big event is the planning towards it.
One of the tasks I was given was to coordinate a media outlet spreadsheet, so it is easy for our director to contact the news outlets to publicize upcoming events like the Holiday Fair. Also, I had to create letters to pass out to the donators and other important key factors that make this event happen. With these tasks I got to show my business skills with excel by organizing and compiling a list together. Most of the work I am doing here is administration related where I am at the desk doing computer work.

The latest projects that I have been completing and working on for the past 2 weeks have been dedicated to the Toy Wrapping Party on December 10th from 5pm-8pmto wrap gifts for the youth of the Western Addition Community to prepare the gifts for the 13th Annual Holiday Fair on December 14th from 10am-2pm. These are the two big events for the holiday season for the AAACC to accomplish holiday cheer for the youth! With this comes lots of organization and preparation. The tasks I have been busy with are labels for the different genders and ages, the supplies for the toy wrapping party, signs to differentiate the variety of gifts, and etc. To make the organizing easier on everyone I became the secretary for the Program Manager, Tamika, so I could jot down all the tasks that need to be completed from entertainment to purchasing toys for the youth. I compiled a whole list and shared it on google docs so everyone is on the same page. So, join us so we can spread the holiday cheer for all!

In the spirit of the holiday season the AAACC’s efforts for the past months have been dedicated to their annual toy drive and holiday fair. For the last days at the internship, I have been assisting with any tasks that come to the preparation for these big events. For the toy wrapping party, I helped with ordering the materials like tape, bags, and sharpies. Also, I created signs and labels to organize the toy distribution. The day before the toy drive was dedicated to setting up the room with laying out the bags filled of toys around the room organizing them by ages and gender. The Holiday drive is like a carnival geared towards the kids and community where there are games, rides, food trucks, performances, SNOW, and of course Santa! This plus many more aspects are involved to make this event happen! But, it is for a great cause, so all the work it comes along with it is all worth it!
It has been a year interning with the AAACC and it has been a wonderful experience from the get go. From the very beginning they have been welcoming making it a safe and fun place to work at. Blessed to be a part of this organization from where I brushed up on skills on event planning that will definitely help me in the future. Happy holidays to all!

This 2013 exhibition gives me a lot of positive emotions, although I am not a big art lover, but old exhibitions have a very different atmosphere. They look very friendly and smell of kindness. Recently I was given access to an online gallery of a famous writer. I wanted to show my girlfriend the writer’s paintings and keep them as a keepsake, but I wasn’t allowed to download them or link to them, so I was upset. And then I remembered that it was possible to record a video directly from my screen. I didn’t have such a program on my laptop, so I found it online at https://www.movavi.com/screen-recorder/ .
