Hi all, my name is Steuart Arboleda. I am an Accounting and Finance major at the University of San Francisco. As a junior, we are often pressured with getting internships and such, but throughout my life I have been involved in community service. So what better way to get experience in a certain field while also giving back to my community. I joined the Public Service Internship position with an open mind and I had the opportunity to work with the African American Shakespeare Company (AASC).
I did not know anything about the organization, but in speaking with my supervisor/Executive Director, Sherri Young, I learned so much about this organization. Its mission of providing a place for actors and actresses a place to utilize and enhance their skills and share their talents brings forth a great impact to the community. AASC brings so much potential to the youth and those around. Dedicated to artistic and cultural experience, AASC strives to create a sense of community with audiences, artists, patrons, neighbors and collaborators.
As an Accounting Intern, I’ve slowly learned about the obstacles the organization is facing. My role will be working directly with the Executive Director, reconciling expense reports as well as researching possible areas of growth in the overall system in terms of ticket sales and expense reports. This is where my main role comes in. As a privileged university student, I think that I can offer my knowledge and skills to the organization in order to help them succeed in whatever way possible. I may not be a Director or CEO, but I can offer what I have learned in school and be dedicated to help everything work. I have really enjoyed my time working at AASC!

Report 1:
Working at a few Show nights, I’ve seen the enthusiasm by the patrons and staff alike. Although the organization is not the biggest, they have created this sponsorship of dedicated individuals who appreciate what AASC does for the community. Patrons continually come back because of the bond they have created with the staff as well as the level of professional quality AASC has to offer for its patron on show nights. The theatre gives this intimate feeling where you are able to see the actors and actresses at a better level, which is probably one reason why people keep coming back.
One thing I’ve learned that AASC struggles with is the lack of resources. With the lack of resources, the organization may struggle with the sense of progression and opportunity of growth. This is one thing small companies and organizations will face on a daily basis especially as a non-profit.
Report 2:
It is my last couple of weeks at AASC, but I will have the opportunity to work with Sherri and AASC for the Cinderella Shows! So far the experience has been great. Seeing locals, and people around the bay area who are excited for every show night makes my job so much easier. Working at the box office, I get to greet and interact with patrons first hand. But also being able to work with accounting related work behind the scenes, I am learning so much about what it takes to run this type of business. Before and after shows, are the hardest parts. Because one will have to get tickets ready, payments to process, and enter all incoming payments via all statements. Having the opportunity to do this is very rewarding as well as exciting because there is also something to new work on and different cases and scenarios to review.
