Mission & Vision
MEDA is a community-based, local economic development corporation located in the Mission District of San Francisco. For over 38 years MEDA has worked to improve economic and social conditions in the neighborhood by stimulating investment, enhancing the business environment, and creating jobs for area residents. MEDA is committed to maintaining the cultural identity and resources of the Mission District.
Mission Statement
The mission of MEDA is to achieve economic justice for San Francisco’s low- to moderate-income Latino families through asset development. Asset Development is the process of encouraging and supporting individuals and families to develop, accumulate and manage personal, social and material (especially financial) assets.
Vision Statement
In the long-term, we envision generations of Latino families that are a part of vibrant, diverse, proud and forward-thinking communities in which residents own their homes and businesses, and are actively engaged in the civic life of their neighborhoods and the institutions that affect their lives. We see these families as having sufficient assets to provide them and future generations with the opportunity to call San Francisco their permanent home.
Core Values
In working to achieve our mission, MEDA has identified several core values that we strive to reflect in all of our activities. Our core values are:
- Equity and fairness. We value equity and fairness in how we work together, in our relations with our constituencies and in the society we seek to help create.
- Relevance. We value work that addresses the actual needs of our constituencies, ensuring that our services add real value and are provided in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
- A healthy workplace. We value sound working conditions for our staff, Board and others who participate in our place of work. We strive to make sure that their experience is positive, fair, sustainable and fulfilling.
- Leadership. We value leadership, the quality of influencing others—through beliefs, ethics, character, vision, commitment, knowledge, wisdom, skills, innovations and initiative—to help achieve economic justice for our constituencies. Leadership can be exercised by everyone, regardless of their position and authority. MEDA seeks to foster leadership within our constituencies. We also aim to foster leadership among our staff, Board, and supporters, and to exercise leadership in the communities in which we work.

Its people, and geographic, social and political dynamics, have strongly shaped who we are and what we do. While our focus is now broader, we actively recognize the importance of the Mission.
About Us
My name is Laura Nava, currently an accounting major and junior at the University of San Francisco. I am from Orange County, California. I chose to move to San Francisco, because I was inspired by all the potential the city holds. When I visited the University of San Francisco I felt very comfortable with the atmosphere. I visioned myself attending USF and taking advantage of all the opportunities that surrounded me. I have never participated in the Public Service Internship Program, and I am so excited to start this new experience.
My name is Nikki Abueg and I’m a junior at the University of San Francisco. I’m from the Los Angeles, CA, but I moved to San Francisco to fulfill my dream of a higher education. I am an accounting major balancing two jobs and two honors programs, but I love a busy schedule! I chose USF because of it’s strong reputation, kind teachers, and wonderful curriculum. I’m constantly falling more and more in love with this school.
Our Experiences
I am honored to have been granted this opportunity to work at Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA). My internship began with an IRS certification test that I had to complete in order to be able to prepare tax returns. More specifically I took the basic level test for the Free Tax Preparation Program. I was knew to this process, but it introduced me to the world of taxes. Since the beginning of my internship each day has passed by fairly quickly. Now we are halfway through the income tax season, and we have served about 2,000 people at the Plaza Adelante site. This significant number of people has totaled up to a total refund including the federal and state to $2,083,535. This is an incredible number, which makes me very proud of all the work I have been a proud of. Also, being a native Spanish speaker has been very beneficial throughout this journey. I can easily connect with clients and prepare a correct tax return. Every day I learn something new whether it be about filing a tax return or hearing a customer story, but I walk away from the day’s work feeling accomplished of all my work. Working at the Mission Economic Development has been such a blessing to be a part of. Like all volunteers, we are required to receive IRS certification to prepare tax returns and I found this to be a great opportunity to learn. It was a different learning tool then my accounting courses and I found it even more applicable to my future career. Similarly to what Laura has mentioned, there is a large number of people and tax returns that have been prepared. In addition to MEDA’s free tax preparation services, they provide various workshops to assist and educate their clients about different financial topics. Our clients never fail to remind me how grateful they are for what we do and this is a constant reminder to work even harder. Every person I meet and work with has his or her own story and unique personality. I look forward to every day knowing I’ll come home with a new story about the people I met.
