ViviendasLeón Fall 2013 [Bryce]

About Me

Hello my fellow PSIPer’s,

My name is Bryce and I am currently a sophomore studying International Business through the University of San Francisco School or Management. During my first semester as a Business student, I have taken pleasure in being part of the University of San Francisco School or Management Public Service Internship Program. The program offered me the opportunity to work hands on with a non-profit based in the Bay Area. Since the beginning of my work, I began to personally grow by living out the mission of the University and by further developing and enhancing my own professional skill sets. My expectation and hope is to further my acquisition of knowledge and experience to better hone my skills in preparation for graduate school and the business world after undergraduate graduation. I have had the honor of working closely with a specific non-profit for the past couple weeks which has allowed me to become more aware of the global inequalities still existing in the world.

The Nonprofit

ViviendasLeón is an international development and education travel organization that is headquartered downtown San Francisco. The agency boasts a long track record of monumental endeavors with the communities it has done work alongside. Priding itself on over eighteen years of experience in travel, service, and rural development; the non-profit boasts a legacy of providing programs to further the advancement of developing communities such as Leon, Nicaragua. It practices its mission to ‘support human and economic development in the rural communities of León, Nicaragua and engage US students in global citizenship’ through it’s philanthropy working closely with the University of San Francisco and the aboriginals of Nicaragua. Social and community driven projects are satisfied and accomplished by community members, travel program participants, staff, volunteers and interns like myself who ensure a genuine and quality impact in the work achieved.

The Internship

My time has been occupied with my work as a Marketing and Research Associate (MRA) intern at ViviendasLeón ensuring the completion and attention to detail to my given tasks. As an MRA, my tasks have included foundation marketing, grants and foundation research, event planning, public relations, Search Engine Optimization management, competitive research, and community outreach. Through my research with the foundation, I have focused on marketing and promotional outlets to advertise VL’s programs, projects, and upcoming events. My role has taken responsibilities of exploring potential media outlets and grants along with foundation funding opportunities and possible partnership opportunities. I am currently working on a personal fundraising plan to aid in funding for VL’s raise $1,000 for the Madre Tierra Art Center by December 31, 2013. The Development organization ViviendasLeón coordinates with provides a range of development programs necessary in the rural community of Leon, Nicaragua. My wishes are to raise 1,000 dollars in my efforts in order to ensure a lasting impact in the community. The money would supply a foundation for the organizations wishes to expand and incorporate more programs and hands-on teaching. I am highly driven to head raising money for such a deserving cause. It gives me pride in the work, which is a driving ambition behind the final product produced. The many functions I manage throughout my internship at ViviendasLeón all contribute to my education, skills, passion and drive to change the world.

November Update

Recently my work at ViviendasLeon has been centered around the past event that took place on Sunday 17th, November at a fellow advocate’s abode situated near the Presidio in San Francisco. The event’s mission was to raise awareness of the many projects ViviendasLeon sustains in Leon, Nicaragua. Along with Alex Rodriguez, a fellow PSIP Intern from USF working for the Nonprofit aswell, I helped with the logistics of the event along with the responsibilities of co-hosting and presentation of event seamlessly. ViviendasLeón aims to coordinate with other organizations based in Nicaragua who help to provide the range of development programs necessary in rural communities. Some of the programs benefitting from the support received at the fundraising event were the New Haven León Sister City Project which aims at enhancing Education in the rural village. The Sostenica project and CEPRODEL which both promote Micro finance and sustainability within the city of Leon, Nicaragua will also receive assistance thanks to the fundraisers many generous patrons.

I am presently busy at work planning my first annual Hoopfest Tournament in the Panhandle planned to occur Sunday November 24th. I love the idea of getting my peers at the University of San Francisco to get active in order to support the many efforts ViviendasLeon sustains throughout Nicaragua. My hope is that the basketball tournament will enlighten my peers of the opportunity and difference that they are making by participating. Even though I have encountered many roadblocks throughout the planning process, I am sure the event will still be a success. My main struggle has been finding a space to host such an event that will maintain accessibility and convenience for the attendees. Upon finding out the USF Koret Gym was unable to host such an event, I took the tournament off campus to the Golden Gate Park Panhandle located close to campus between Fell and Clayton St.

After reflecting of the obstacles I encountered throughout the experience of planning the Hoopfest, I believe the hurdles enabled me to grow and forced my creativity to thrive. I struggled successfully canvassing many different businesses for donations. After visiting many stores in Haight Ashbury and around the Richmond District, my yields were unfruitful for prizes and contributions for Hoopfest. The biggest roadblock was the realization that Koret was not able to be utilized by a single student like myself attempting to plan an event like Hoopfest. After deciding to move the event off campus, my goal was to obtain incentives for my peers and other supporters of the organization to attend. After lengthy conversations with the director of BonAppetit on USF campus, I was able to secure refreshments, cuisine and snacks to nourish the players during the event. Along with the sustenance, I went thrifting for the other many materials to make the event a success. After hunting around the city of San Francisco, I secured a basketball along with a trophy for the MVP of Hoopfest 2013.

Throughout planning the ViviendasLeon first annual Hoopfest event, I found that working for a Nonprofit can prove to be difficult at times. Without the excess resource of funds, It is up to the advocates of the Nonprofit to make ends meet and still produce results. Other valuable resources are examined that might have been looked over otherwise to accomplish tasks without writing a check or exchanging a monetary note. I realized that it is important to utilize all available resources to maximize success. I realize not to burn any bridges since I never know when and If I will need to rely on the individual in the future. My boss at BonAppetit is a connection I am glad I can still utilize for Hoopfest and in the future. Maintaining positive connections and relationships are central in business and I am glad that I had the lesson reinforced throughout planning the first annual ViviendasLeon Hoopfest.

December Update

December has proven to be a great month for ViviendasLeon. Our NonProfit has been busy organizing events and reinforcing the many different branches of development ViviendasLeon has been a part of. The first annual Hoopfest was a success drawing many spectators and athletes alike. I enjoyed seeing my USF peers compete against the local San Francisco Panhandle natives for a great cause. We managed to spread awareness of the Nonprofit while encouraging students and non-sudents to take part in a cause like ViviendasLeon.

Along with the success of Hoopfest 2013, ViviendasLeon was hard at work setting up our Dine & Donate event in proximity to the office. The Gaslamp Cafe was the chosen venue to have the event on Decmeber 6, 2013. The cause of the event was to donate proceeds towards ViviendasLeon’s Youth Soccer Program in Leon, Nicaragua. Along with my mentor, the other interns and I invited guests to attend in order to benefit the program in Leon.

Gaslamp Benefit Dinner

Throughout the last couple weeks, I have found that my professional demeanor has improved and I have honed my analytical and computer literacy skills. Organizing and orchestrating events proved to be a much harder task than I initially imagined. I have learnt that as an organizer, It is my sole responsibility that the given event happens seamlessly. the skill of multitasking and delegating responsibilities to trusted peers is a vital part of arranging an effective fundraiser.

The team at ViviendasLeon is currently hard at work spreading awareness for the Run or Dye 5k in San Francisco on Saturday, December 14th. The NonProfit has been selected to be  featured as the main partner of the race by receiving a generous percentage of the registration fees. We are eager and highly motivated to make this event a success. My peer and I have been busy creating media coverage for the event along with posters and canvasing for participation. I am excited to see the end result and hope to be able to share a successful outcome with my next blog entry.
