African American Shakespeare Company is non profit organization which provides opportunities for individuals to express their talent in the theatre.
As a junior Accounting and Marketing major, I have the opportunity to work with a community partner, AASC, interning as an accounting intern for two semesters now. It has been a pleasure being able to work for the company for a 2nd semester. I am able to understand and flourish in the company, because I understand the company dynamics as well as its flaws. This semester I definitely had a bigger role as an intern. I have became a box office manager during their productions on the weekends. It has definitely been a good experience as I develop my leadership skills. I have gained skills in time management especially working under pressure. As patrons enter the theatre they expect the best overall customer experience, and I believe I am able to offer that for them. Managing ticket and concession sales is definitely something different, but it gave me the opportunity to work in different situations. Not only that I am to manage the box office, I am also able to identify certain flaws in the box office system. With that I am able to give my input to the executive director. Implementing my system as I work at the box office has helped me be successful during the time.
I also had the opportunity to train and supervise another accounting student. My ability to train and manage another student intern has helped the Executive Director, Sherri Young, and has definitely helped her time being that she has so much on her plate already. I am grateful that I can help the ED during this time.
Working for AASC has been a good experience as I grow as professional.
